The method comprises the steps of obtaining the load data of the thermal power generating unit; storing the load data to a database, working out the standard deviations of the load data according to the load data, counting the standard deviations of the load data, obtaining a standard deviation threshold for distinguishing the load stability state and the load instability state, and determining the load stability state of the thermal power generating unit. According to the method provided by the invention, distinguishing and screening are performed in the historical data by the statistical means, and thereby the stability state and the instability state of the historical loads of the thermal power generating unit are finally distinguished, the start time and stop time of the load stability state of the thermal power generating unit are determined, and a foundation is provided for further exploring the operating characteristics of the thermal power generating unit.
