Abstract

The present invention relates to automatic shorted LED detection for light emitting diode (LED) array loads. During the start-up phase, each respective test current is delivered to a respective load chain of the plurality of load chains. Each load chain is coupled between a common node and a corresponding output node. Each load chain includes N series coupled loads, where N is an integer greater than one. The maximum voltage is determined from among the output voltages, where the output voltage is the voltage at the output node. And, the minimum voltage is determined from among the output voltages. A maximum voltage from among the output voltages is compared to a minimum voltage from among the output voltages to make a determination as to whether the maximum voltage exceeds the minimum voltage by a threshold. An indication is output based on the determined result.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to electronic circuits, and more particularly to failure detection in electronic load chains, such as in light emitting diodes (LEDs). Background technique [0002] Lighting devices (e.g. lamps) that include light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as light-emitting components generally cannot be simply connected to a voltage feed, but must be driven by a special driver circuit (or control circuit) that provides a defined load to the LED current in order to provide the desired radiant power (radiant flux). Because individual LEDs exhibit only small forward voltages (ranging from about 1.5V for infrared GaAs LEDs up to violet and 4V for UV InGaN LEDs), so several LEDs are connected in series to form a so-called LED chain. [0003] In many applications it is desirable to have fault detection included in the driver circuit (or control circuit) which allows detection of defective LEDs in the LED chain connected to the driver circuit. ...
