Abstract

The invention provides an engine and an air cylinder determination method used for performing air cylinder determination in the engine. The engine comprises a cam phase sensor and a crankshaft position sensor. The air cylinder determination of the engine can be completed through the combination of the cam phase sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. The engine also comprises a valve position sensor used for detecting the opening and closing of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. When the cam phase sensor fails, the air cylinder determination of the engine can be completed through the valve position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. When the valve position sensor detects a rising edge of an opening signal of the exhaust valve and immediately then the crankshaft position sensor detects any missing tooth in missing teeth, the exhaust top dead center of a 1# cylinder is determined. When the valve position sensor detects a falling edge of an opening signal of the intake valve and immediately then the crankshaft position sensor detects any missing tooth in the missing teeth, the compression top dead center of the 1# cylinder is determined.
