Problems solved by technology

In both cases, the server may be susceptible to loss of backup power for a variety of reasons including failure of the dedicated power path between the server and the backup components and systems as well as failure of the backup components and systems themselves
Additionally, where a set of spare components and systems provides standby power to multiple servers, the multiple servers may be Loss of standby power due to one or more different faults
Additionally, backup power to one or more servers may be lost if one or more spare components and systems are taken offline for maintenance
Mitigating such risks can be costly in terms of capital costs as well as in terms of operating and maintenance costs (e.g. performing additional maintenance on spare components and systems to mitigate the risk of loss of standby power due to failures in such components and systems)

Embodiment Construction

[0018] Various embodiments of a power distribution system for providing redundant power to computer systems in a data center are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a data center includes an aisle space providing computing capacity and separate busways each extending along opposite ends of a length of the aisle space and providing redundant secondary power for the computing capacity. The aisle space includes a row of rack computer systems extending along the length of the aisle space, two or more main power bus bars extending through the aisle space parallel to the rows of rack computer systems, and A spatial secondary power bus parallel to the at least one row of rack computer systems. A main power busbar may distribute main power received at at least one of the at least two main power busbars from an independent main power system to the row of rack computer systems to provide the rack computer systems with main power supply. The secondary power busbar includes separate...

Abstract

A concurrently maintainable secondary power distribution system enables redundant secondary power supply to electrical loads receiving separate primary supplies from separate primary power systems via secondary power busbars. Independent busway, each carrying power from the secondary power system, is coupled to opposite ends of the busbars. Each busway can carry power from an independent secondary power system, and a switching device bridging the connection between the busway and the power busbars can switch the power busbar from one of the busway selectively switching to the other busway, thereby switching between one of said secondary power systems. The independent secondary power systems may be coupled together at various points in the respective power systems such that one or more portions of one of the secondary power systems may be distributed from the secondary Power received by another upstream portion of the power system.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to systems and methods for providing redundant secondary power. Background technique [0002] Organizations such as online retailers, Internet service providers, search service providers, financial institutions, universities, and other computing-intensive organizations often conduct computer operations through large-scale computing facilities. Such computing facilities house and accommodate large numbers of servers, networks and computer equipment to process, store and exchange data needed to carry out the operations of the organization. Typically, a computer room of a computing facility includes a number of computing racks, which may include server racks. Each computing rack, in turn, may include a number of computer systems, servers, associated computer equipment, and the like. [0003] Because a computer room of a computing facility may contain a large number of servers, large amounts of electrical power may be requi...
