Embodiment Construction

[0020] Embodiments of systems and methods for laser cladding are disclosed herein. In an embodiment, a laser cladding system constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention may be used to apply beads of molten cladding material to a substrate surface of a component under controlled environmental conditions configured for Reduces the occurrence and / or size of voids within the cladding material layer that form when the beads solidify.

[0021] In an embodiment, a laser cladding system constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention includes a vacuum chamber having a laser transparent window and a pump system configured to convert The chamber is selectively evacuated of gas prior to the cladding material being bonded to the substrate surface of the component disposed within the chamber. In an embodiment, the laser device includes a robotic laser motion system configured to move and / or adjust the orientation of the laser beam relative...

Abstract

A laser cladding system includes a laser device, a chamber, and a pump system. The laser device is configured to generate a laser beam. The chamber includes an inner surface that defines a clad region that includes a sealed volume. The chamber includes a window made of a laser transparent material and configured to allow the laser beam to pass therethrough into the cladding region. The pump system has ports in communication with the cladding zone. The pump system is configured to selectively generate a vacuum pressure within the cladding zone sufficient to evacuate gas from within the cladding zone through the port. The laser device includes a laser head from which the laser beam emanates and a robotic laser motion system configured to selectively move the laser head to move the laser beam relative to a reference point within the chamber.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for laser cladding, and more particularly to systems and methods for performing laser cladding in a controlled environment. Background technique [0002] Laser cladding is a material deposition process in which a suitable material, such as powdered or filamentous metal, is deposited onto a substrate by using a laser as a heat source to create a metallurgical bond between the deposited material and the substrate . Laser cladding can be used as an alternative to conventional welding and thermal spraying techniques. [0003] In some cases, laser cladding can be prone to defects such as excessive oxidation and porosity. The extent to which this occurs may depend on the type of material being deposited. Certain applications require extremely high quality (for example, only limited porosity can be tolerated in the cladding). Traditionally, a local flow of inert shielding gas has been directed...
