A magnetic switch 2 for a starter is provided with: an exciting coil 3; a plunger 6 that is driven by magnetic force of the exciting coil 3; shafts (11, 12) that are transferred by driving the plunger 6; a movable contact 9 having a through-hole into which the shaft 12 is inserted; and a fixed contact 10 that faces the movable contact 9. The movable contact 9 has a rectangular plate shape, and the size of the through-hole along the short-side direction of the movable contact 9 is smaller than the size thereof along the long-side direction of the movable contact 9.
