Embodiment Construction

[0126] The inventors have recognized that one of the fundamental limitations associated with conventional additive manufacturing methods is the strength and durability of the resulting parts. For example, fused wire fabrication results in parts that exhibit lower strength than comparable injection molded parts. While not wishing to be bound by theory, the reduced strength is due to weaker bonding (and also air bubbles and pores) between adjacent strips of deposited material compared to a continuous and substantially non-porous material formed, for example, in injection molding. The present inventors have also recognized that prepreg composite construction methods using sheet-based technologies to form three-dimensional parts are time consuming and difficult to process resulting in high costs. Furthermore, bending such a sheet around a curve, such as a circle, may cause fibers to overlap, buckle and / or twist, resulting in undesirable soft spots in the resulting part. As for 3D...

Abstract

Various embodiments related to three dimensional printers, and reinforced filaments, and their methods of use are described. In one embodiment, a void free reinforced filament is fed into an extrusion nozzle. The reinforced filament includes a core, which may be continuous or semi-continuous, and a matrix material surrounding the core. The reinforced filament is heated to a temperature greater than a melting temperature of the matrix material and less than a melting temperature of the core prior to extruding the filament from the extrusion nozzle.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application is a divisional application of Chinese patent application No. 201480028653.9. The filing date of the patent application No. 201480028653.9 is March 21, 2014, and the title of the invention is "three-dimensional printing". technical field [0003] Aspects of the invention relate to three-dimensional printing. Background technique [0004] Since the initial development of three-dimensional printing (also known as additive manufacturing), various types of three-dimensional printing and printers that construct layer-by-layer parts have been envisioned. For example, stereolithography (SLA) produces high-resolution parts. However, parts made using SLA are generally not durable, and are often not UV-stabilized, and are instead typically used for proof-of-concept work. In addition to SLA, fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printers have also been used to construct parts by depositing continuous filament beads of ...
