AI Technical Summary

Problems solved by technology

In these cases the feeding technique using roving cannot be applied
Adding fibers as pure fibers (i.e. where the fibers are more or less free to move relative to each other) can lead to uneven distribution of the fibers in the polymer, as the fibers can stick together leading to uneven distribution and / or feeding parts the jam
Compensating for this inhomogeneity by more fully mixing the polymer after combining with the fibers is undesirable because the fibers tend to break during this compounding step, resulting in a reduction in the average length of the fibers and therefore the desired performance characteristics will not be achieved

Embodiment

[0173] In all examples a co-rotating twin-screw extruder (ZSK 40 from Coperion) has been used. As a side feeder, a Coperion ZSB40 twin-screw side feeder has been used.

[0174] Use the following method parameters:

[0175] - Production capacity is 100kg / h

[0176] - The screw speed is 100-150rpm

[0177] -Cylinder temperature about 250°C

[0178] - template with 5mm holes in which 3 holes are opened

[0179] Nonwovens:

[0180] The nonwoven fabric comprises 80% by weight of carbon fibers and is produced by needling. The average fiber diameter is 7 μm.

[0181] The polymer and the additives different from the nonwoven fabric are fed into the extruder and in the extruder there are three kneading blocks (two KB 45 / 5 / 40, followed by KB 45 / 5 / 20LH) and left-handed Melt kneading in the fourth barrel consisting of conveying elements. The nonwoven was fed into the sixth barrel using a side feeder. A second kneading zone located in the eighth barrel and consisting of three knea...

Abstract

Process for producing a fiber-reinforced polymer composition comprising the following steps: a) providing a polymer composition, b) melting the polymer composition in a compounding device, c) feedinga non-woven fabric into the compounding device in the presence of the molten polymer composition, and d) withdrawing the fiber-reinforced polymer composition from the compounding device. Furthermore, the product obtained by the process and the use of a non-woven fabric in an extruder to reinforce a polymer with fibers are disclosed.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of fibre-reinforced polymer compositions, wherein a nonwoven fabric is fed to a compounding device. Background technique [0002] Fiber-reinforced polymer compositions generally combine good mechanical properties (eg, stiffness and impact resistance, etc.) with low weight, making them particularly suitable for automotive applications, aircraft and ship structures, wind turbines, and the like. In addition, polymers can be selected based on the properties desired for the application (eg, chemical resistance, processability, etc.). [0003] The incorporation of fibers from the endless roving into the polymer can generally be easily achieved by a uniform distribution of the fibers in the polymer. [0004] Depending on the chemical nature or origin of the fibers, the preparation of rovings is not possible. For example, natural fibers cannot be processed into endless rovings, or fibers originat...
