Problems solved by technology

The disadvantage of this method is that it hinders the portability of the impact tool, for example, the exhaustion of air from the tool into the sterile field due to the presence of the tethered air line, and the fatigue of the physician handling the tool
As shown in U.S. Patent 5057,112, this method cannot precisely control the impact force and frequency, and instead, when actuated, operates more like a jackhammer
Second, the lack of any measure for precise control makes accurate broaching of the cavity more difficult, leading to unnecessary complications and trauma to the patient
[0007] A third technique for creating cavities relies on computer-controlled robotic arms, and while this method overcomes problems with fatigue and accuracy, this method incurs very high capital costs and additionally eliminates the surgeon's need to learn from manual methods. Get tactile feedback
This invention works very well, however, during testing it does not allow an easy way to retrograde the cutter, the cutter would get caught in the soft tissue
Further, air pressure causes enormous forces on the gear train and linear motion converter components, which lead to premature wear of the components

Embodiment Construction

[0043] There may be many variations to the preferred embodiment which has been described in detail herein for purposes of illustration. It is to be understood that various omissions and substitutions of equivalents are contemplated where expedient, however, it is intended that such applications or implementations be included within the scope of the present disclosure without departing from the spirit or scope of the present disclosure.

[0044] The present disclosure provides a motor-driven orthopedic impact tool with controllable rap impact. The tool includes the ability to perform single or multiple impacts as well as perform variable direction, variable force and variable frequency impacts. In an embodiment, the impact force is adjustable. In another embodiment a detent may be provided which facilitates the generation of higher energy impacts. In another embodiment, the impact is transmitted to a broach, osteotome or other end effector attached to the tool.

Abstract

An orthopedic impacting tool including a motor, an energy storage chamber, a striker, and an anvil. The motor stores energy in the energy storage chamber and then releases it, causing the striker to apply a controlled force on an adapter (1) to create a precise impact for use in a surgical setting. The tool may further comprise a combination anvil and adapter. Alternatively, the tool may comprisea gas spring assembly system for generating an impact force. The tool further allows forward or backward impacting for expanding the size or volume of the opening or for facilitating removal of a broach, implant, or other surgical implement from the opening. An energy adjustment control of the tool allows a surgeon to increase or decrease the impact energy. A light source and hand grips improve ease of operation of the tool.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Documents [0002] This application claims priority under 35 USC § 119 to a pending US Provisional Patent Application, Application No. 62 / 101,416, filed January 9, 2015, the entire disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to power tools for impact in surgical applications, such as orthopedic surgery, and, more particularly, to a motor-driven tool for surgical impact that is capable of providing a broach or other end effector with controlled impact. Background technique [0004] In the orthopedic field, prosthetic devices such as artificial joints are often implanted or placed in the bone cavity of the patient. Often the cavity is created during a surgical procedure before the prosthesis is placed and implanted, for example, the doctor may remove or compress existing bone to create the cavity. The prosthesis typically includes a stem or other protrusion that can be ins...
