The device and method solve a problem of how to inmprove the reliability of the fault protection of the motor control system. The device comprises a data acquisition module, a power module, a CPLD module, a DSP module and a level conversion module connected to the CPLD module. The data acquisition module is electrically connected to the level conversion module. A power module data line is bidirectionally connected to the level conversion module. The data acquisition module is further electrically connected to the DSP module. The method includes: when a fault signal value is greater than a hardware threshold, the CPLD module blocks a hardware PWM pulse, and triggers the DSP module to activate a fault protection interrupt. The DSP module receives a detection signal value and compares the same with a software threshold 1 and asoftware threshold 2 respectively, reduces the power when the detection signal value is greater than the software threshold 1 but less than the software threshold 2, and blocks the PWM pulse by software when the detection signal value is greater than the software threshold 2.
