Embodiment Construction

[0038] figure 1is a block and schematic diagram of an exemplary process control network 100 operating in a process control system, process plant, or other industrial setting 10 . The process control network 100 may include a network backbone 105 that provides, directly or indirectly, connectivity between various other devices. Network backbone 105 may include wireless and / or wired communication channels, also referred to as communication paths or communication links. In various embodiments, the devices coupled to the network backbone 105 include a combination of access points 72, which may be handheld or other portable computing devices such as laptops, tablets, handheld smart devices, portable test device (PTD), etc.), and a host computer 13 such as a personal computer, a workstation, etc., each having a display screen 14 and various other input / output devices (not shown), a server 150, etc.

Abstract

Predictive wireless connectivity diagnostics for a wireless mesh network in a process control system includes generating predicted pinch points and potential pinch points in response to a connectivitycondition. The connectivity condition is an anticipated failure of a communication ability within the wireless mesh network. The predicted pinch points are generated as a function of the failure of the communication ability and communication paths within the wireless mesh network. The potential pinch points are generated as a function of the failure of the communication ability and the number ofneighbors in direct wireless communication for each wireless node. The potential pinch point is a wireless node that has less than a threshold number of neighboring wireless communication devices in direct wireless communication with the wireless node.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to process control systems, and more particularly, to predictive diagnostics to identify potential connectivity issues in mesh networks in process control systems. Background technique [0002] Process control systems are widely used in manufacturing plants and / or factories that manufacture products or control processes (eg, chemical manufacturing, power plant control, etc.). Process control systems are also used in the collection of natural resources such as, for example, oil and gas drilling and processing processes, and the like. Virtually any manufacturing process, resource acquisition process, etc. can be automated by applying one or more process control systems. It is believed that process control systems will eventually be more widely used in the agricultural field. [0003] Distributed process control systems, such as those used in chemical, petroleum, or other processes, typically include one or more ...
