Problems solved by technology

Although pultrusion fabrication can be an efficient way to continuously fabricate high-strength hollow structures, the resulting structures may lack the form required for some applications
Additionally, the integration of various fiber patterns within pultruded hollow structures may be limited, thereby limiting the usable properties of the resulting hollow structures.

Embodiment Construction

[0015] figure 1 with 2 Various exemplary systems 10 and 12 are shown that can be used to continuously manufacture hollow composite structures 14 (e.g., tubes, hoses, channels, conduits, ducts) having any desired cross-sectional shape (e.g., circular or polygonal). Wait). Each of the systems 10 , 12 may include a support 16 , a driver 18 and a head 20 . Head 20 may be connected to support 16 via driver 18 . exist figure 1 In the disclosed embodiment, support 16 is a robotic arm capable of moving driver 18 and head 20 in multiple directions during fabrication of structure 14 such that longitudinal axis 22 of resulting structure 14 is three-dimensional. exist figure 2 In the preferred embodiment, support 16 is an overhead gantry that is also capable of moving head 20 and drive 18 in multiple directions during fabrication of structure 14 . Although the support 16 in both embodiments is shown as capable of six-axis movement, any other type of support capable of moving the dr...

Abstract

A system is disclosed for use in manufacturing a composite structure. The system may include a support configured to move in a plurality of directions during manufacturing of the composite structure, and a head coupled to the support. The head may have a housing that is configured to receive a liquid matrix and at least one continuous fiber and configured to discharge a tubular structure. The headmay also have a nozzle operatively connected to the housing and configured to deposit a material layer onto a surface of the tubular structure as the tubular structure is discharging from the housing, and a squeegee associated with the nozzle and configured to wipe over the material layer. The head may further have a first cure enhancer operatively connected to the housing and configured to curethe liquid matrix in the tubular structure during discharge, and a second cure enhancer configured to cure the material layer deposited by the nozzle.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to manufacturing heads and systems, and more particularly, to heads and systems for the continuous manufacture of composite hollow structures. Background technique [0002] Extrusion manufacturing is a known method for producing continuous hollow structures. During extrusion manufacturing, a liquid matrix (eg, a thermoset resin or heated thermoplastic) is pushed through a die of desired cross-sectional shape and size. After leaving the mold, the material solidifies and hardens into its final form. In some applications, UV (ultraviolet) light and / or ultrasonic vibrations are used to accelerate the curing of the liquid matrix as it exits the mold. Hollow structures produced by extrusion manufacturing processes can be of any continuous length, have straight or curved profiles, consistent cross-sectional shapes, and excellent surface finish. Although extrusion fabrication can efficiently fabricate hollow structur...
