Embodiment Construction

[0015] In this specification, references to "an embodiment," "one embodiment," etc. mean that the particular feature, function, structure, or characteristic described is included in at least one embodiment described herein. The appearances of these phrases in this specification are not necessarily all referring to the same embodiment. On the other hand, the mentioned embodiments are not necessarily mutually exclusive.

[0016] The following description generally assumes that the "user" of the display device is a human. Note, however, that display devices in accordance with the disclosed embodiments may potentially be used by users other than humans, such as machines or animals. Thus, the term "user" can refer to any of those possibilities, unless obvious from the context or otherwise indicated. Furthermore, the term "optical receiver" is used herein as a generic term to refer to a human eye, an animal eye, or a machine-implemented optical sensor designed to detect images in ...

Abstract

An apparatus and method for low-latency, low-power eye tracking is disclosed. In some embodiments, the eye tracking method operates a first sensor with a first power consumption level that tracks the position of the user's eyes. In response to detecting that the eye has not changed position for a period of time, the method ceases operation of the first sensor and instead operates a second sensor that detects a change in the position of the eye. The power consumption level of the second sensor is lower than the power consumption level of the first sensor. Once the eye position changes, the first sensor resumes operation.

Description

Background technique [0001] Eye tracking is the process of tracking the movement of one or both of a person's eyes relative to the person's head. Based on the obtained eye position information, eye tracking can be used as an input for human-computer interaction. One method of eye tracking is based on video oculometry (VOG). VOG is a non-invasive video-based method of measuring eye movements. Light (eg, infrared light) illuminates and reflects from the eye. A camera senses the reflected light and records an image of the eye. Based on the image of the eye, the eye tracking system identifies the pupil and tracks the position of the pupil center over time. However, the computational power required to track the pupils in the image often introduces delays. Furthermore, the light sources, cameras and processors of eye tracking systems consume significant amounts of power. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION [0002] Described herein are apparatus and methods for low latency, low power e...
