Embodiment Construction

[0037] The presently preferred embodiments of the present invention are best understood by reference to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals indicate identical or functionally similar elements. It will be readily understood that the various components of the invention may be arranged and designed in many different configurations, as generally depicted and illustrated in the drawings herein. Accordingly, the following more detailed description is not intended to limit the scope of the invention as claimed, but is merely representative of presently preferred embodiments of the invention, as shown in the accompanying drawings.

[0038] now refer to Figure 4A , shows catheter system 100 . The basic inventive concept of the present invention can be incorporated into any compatible catheter system. Examples of compatible catheter systems 100 include catheter adapter 110 , introducer needle 120 , trocar peripheral intravascular catheter 140 , and needle hub 150 . In some ...

Abstract

A catheter system (100), having a catheter adapter (110) with a proximal end, a distal end (114), and an interior extending therebetween. An intravenous catheter (140) coupled to the distal end of thecatheter adapter and including a lumen. A central pathway (132) in fluid communication with the interior of the catheter adapter and the lumen of the intravenous catheter. An interface surface (118)comprising a portion of the central pathway. An introducer needle (120) positioned within the central pathway and having a distal end (122) comprising a distal opening, a proximal end, and a body extending therebetween and an indicator (180) provided on an outer surface of the introducer needle and having a distal end spaced from the distal opening a distance that is greater than a distance between the proximal end of the catheter adapter and the interface surface.

Description

Background technique [0001] Infusion therapy is one of the most common healthcare procedures. Hospital, home care, and other patients receive fluids, medicines, and blood products through vascular access devices inserted into the vascular system. Infusion therapy may be used to treat infection, provide anesthesia or pain relief, provide nutritional support, treat cancerous growths, maintain blood pressure and heart rhythm, or many other clinically important purposes. [0002] Vascular access devices facilitate infusion therapy. Vascular access devices can provide access to the patient's peripheral or central vasculature. Vascular access devices can be left in place for the short term (days), intermediate term (weeks), or long term (months to years). Vascular access devices can be used for continuous infusion therapy or intermittent therapy. [0003] A common vascular access device is a catheter inserted into a patient's vein. Catheters can vary in length from a few centim...
