[0036] The present disclosure features actuators for panel audio speakers, such as distributed mode speakers (DML). Such speakers can be integrated into mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets or wearable devices such as smart watches and head mounted devices such as smart glasses. For example, refer to figure 1, mobile device 100 includes a device base 102 and a touch panel display 104, which includes a flat panel display (eg, an OLED or LCD display panel) with integrated on-panel audio speakers. Mobile device 100 interacts with a user in a variety of ways, including displaying images and receiving touch input via touch panel display 104 . Typically, mobile devices have a depth of approximately 10mm (millimeters) or less, a width of 60mm to 80mm (eg, 68mm to 72mm), and a height of 100mm to 160mm (eg, 138mm to 144mm).

Abstract

An actuator includes a frame that includes a panel extending in a plane and one or more pillars extending perpendicular from the plane. The actuator further includes a magnetic circuit assembly that includes a magnet and a voice coil which are moveable relative to each other along an axis perpendicular to the plane of the panel. The actuator also includes one or more suspension members attaching the frame to a first component of the magnetic circuit assembly. Each suspension member includes a vertical segment attaching the suspension member to a corresponding one of the pillars. Each suspension member also includes a first arm extending away from the corresponding pillar to an end attached to the first component of the magnetic circuit assembly. During operation of the actuator, the firstarm of the suspension member flexes to accommodate axial displacements of the magnet relative to the voice coil.
