Problems solved by technology

[0008] Delay in administering pacing or defibrillation to a patient when needed may be detrimental to the patient's condition and may result in reduced survival
Additionally, defibrillation and transcutaneous pacing can be uncomfortable for the patient
Unfortunately, because the shocks used for defibrillation and pacing in intensive care or emergency situations are most often delivered externally, they require a large charge, sometimes causing serious harm to the patient

Embodiment Construction

[0025] figure 1 An exemplary blood pump system 100 is shown including catheter 102, pump housing 104, rotor 106, drive shaft (or drive cable) 118, cannula 108, flexible protrusion 114, electrodes 112 in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure. and reference electrode 107 . Pump housing 104 of blood pump system 100 is coupled to the distal end of catheter 102 . The rotor 106 is coupled to a drive shaft 118 and is positioned within the pump housing 104 . In addition, if figure 1 As shown in the example shown, the rotor 106 may also extend beyond the distal end of the pump housing 104 into the proximal end of the cannula 108 . In some aspects of the technology, drive shaft 118 may extend through catheter 102 and may be configured to rotatably drive rotor 106 via a motor located outside the patient's body. In some aspects of the technology, rotor 106 may be driven by a motor located within the patient, such as within pump housing 104 . A cannula 108 extends from the...

Abstract

A blood pump system includes a catheter, a pump housing disposed distal to a distal end of the catheter, a rotor positioned at least partially in the pump housing, a controller, and an electrode coupled to a distal region of the blood pump. The electrodes may be used to sense an electrocardiogram (EKG) signal and transmit the signal to a controller of the blood pump. Operation of the blood pump may be adjusted based on the EKG signal and a cardiac parameter derived from the EKG signal. Further, the controller may determine a need for defibrillation or pacing of the patient's heart based on the signal, and may administrate shock therapy to the heart via an electrode coupled to the blood pump. The use of the electrode with a blood pump that has been placed in the heart allows for more efficient and safer treatment of severe cardiac conditions.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 868,403, filed June 28, 2019, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Background technique [0003] Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of morbidity, mortality, and healthcare burden worldwide. Various treatment modalities have been developed for cardiovascular disease, ranging from drugs to mechanical devices and eventually transplants. Temporary cardiac support devices, such as ventricular assist devices, provide hemodynamic support and promote cardiac recovery. Some intracardiac heart pump assemblies can be introduced surgically or percutaneously into the heart to move blood from one location in the heart or circulatory system to another location in the heart or circulatory system. For example, when deployed in the heart, an intracardiac pump can pump blood from the left ventricle of the heart into the ao...
