Embodiment Construction

[0028] The present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings. Referring to the figure, gas stream 20 typically contains about 90-99 mole percent carbon dioxide, up to about 1.0 mole percent water soluble impurities, and water vapor. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, gas stream 20 also contains light impurities, typically at a concentration of up to about 5 mole percent.

[0029] Crude carbon dioxide gas stream 20 is cooled in heat exchanger 1 by indirect heat exchange with a suitable fluid such as forced air, cooling water or a liquid refrigerant and then enters phase separator 2 in stream 21 where it is separated into a gas part and a liquid water part. The gaseous portion enters compressor 5 as feed or gas stream 22 , which is compressed typically to about 4-6 atmospheres to produce compressed gas stream 23 .

[0030] Compressed gaseous stream 23 containing carbon dioxide, water vapor and water soluble impurities and light impuritie...

Abstract

A system for cleaning a carbon dioxide gas stream of water soluble contaminants with improved recovery of carbon dioxide wherein the water soluble contaminants are removed into countercurrently flowing water which undergoes at least one pressure reduction step releasing absorbed carbon dioxide for recapture and recycle into the carbon dioxide gas stream.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to the production of carbon dioxide. Background technique [0002] Carbon dioxide has many uses. For example, carbon dioxide is used to carbonate beverages; to cool, freeze and package seafood, meat, poultry, baked goods, fruits and vegetables; and to extend the shelf life of dairy products. Carbon dioxide is an important environmental component that replaces sulfuric acid to control pH levels in industrial waste and process water treatment. Other uses include drinking water treatment, environmentally friendly pesticides and atmospheric additives in greenhouses to promote vegetable growth. [0003] Typically, carbon dioxide is produced by purifying waste streams that are a by-product of organic and inorganic chemical processes. This waste stream contains carbon dioxide from the chemical process and water-soluble impurities that must be purified before the carbon dioxide is recovered. Purging results in some l...
