Embodiment Construction

[0019] The invention provides a kiln device for firing a honeycomb ceramic structure. Such kilns are essentially free from the deleterious effects of releasing carbonaceous matter. figure 1 is a longitudinal view illustrating an example of the tunnel kiln of the present invention. In this example, tunnel kiln 10 includes a kiln door area 12, a carbonaceous material release area 14 located behind the kiln door area, and a sintering area 16 located behind the carbonaceous material release area. figure 1 The tunnel kiln shown is internally heated with a number of heaters (not shown), such as a series of burners capable of firing the green ceramic honeycomb structure. The ceramic honeycomb bodies are placed on a number of kiln cars 18 adapted to transport the fired material through the tunnel kiln.

[0020] see now figure 2 , which is a top view schematically depicting the release zone 14 and the kiln door zone 12 in the tunnel kiln. The tunnel kiln also includes a gas distri...

Abstract

A tunnel kiln (10) for firing ceramic honeycomb structural body comprising a vestibule region (12), a carbonaceous material release region (14) located downstream of the vestibule region and a sintering region (16) located downstream of the carbonaceous material release region and having a multiplicity of kiln cars adapted to convey materials to be fired through the kiln. A gas distribution system is provided which includes a series of conduits (22, 24, 26, 28, 30) each which operatively communicates with an injection site which operatively communicates with the interior of the release region for introducing a gas into the carbonaceous release region. The injection sites include a combustion burner located site (38), a vestibule located site (32), an undercar located site (34), a rooftop located site (36), and a sidewall located site (40) or combinations thereof.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to US Patent Provisional Application No. 60 / 067,105, entitled "Tunnel Kiln for Firing Ceramic Honeycomb," filed December 2, 1997, by A.T. Dull and T.S. Hinkle et al. technical field [0002] The invention relates to a tunnel kiln suitable for firing honeycomb ceramic bodies. More particularly, the present invention relates to firing kilns suitable for firing honeycomb ceramic bodies from batches having a problematic high content of organic matter. Background of the invention [0003] Honeycomb ceramic products or ceramic honeycomb structures (i.e. honeycomb ceramic bodies) have been prepared by mixing ceramic materials, water and various carbonaceous substances including extrusion and forming aids to form plastic batches, Then it is shaped into a honeycomb ceramic green body by extruding the plastic batch material, and finally the honeycomb ceramic green body is fired in a firing furnace at a predetermined temperature. [0004] Extrus...
