[0033] In the following description, for purposes of illustration and not limitation, specific details are set forth, such as specific circuits, circuit elements, techniques, etc., in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art that the invention may be practiced in other embodiments that depart from these specific details. For other examples, detailed descriptions of known methods, devices and circuits are omitted so as not to obscure the description of the present invention.

[0034] figure 2 An exemplary radio communication device 200 is illustrated in which the built-in multi-band patch antenna of the present invention may be implemented. The communication device 200 includes a housing 210 with a microphone port 220 and a speaker port 230 adjacent to a user's mouth and ear, respectively. Keypad 240 enables the user to interact with the communication device, for example, by entering a dialed t...

Abstract

The present invention provides a small, in-body multi-band antenna suitable for use in future compact mobile terminals. According to an exemplary embodiment, a semi-in-body printed antenna is provided that includes patch elements of different sizes and can be tuned to different frequency bands. One internal patch element is positioned on a printed circuit board (PCB) within the communications device, while the other patch element is positioned on the outside of the PCB. A groove is formed in each patch element which divides the patch element into sub-sections. Each sub-section of the internal patch element is structured so that it resonates at a frequency in the same frequency band to which the internal patch element is tuned. The sub-section structure of each outer patch element is similar, but has a larger resonant bandwidth than the inner patch element over a frequency band over which the outer patch element is tuned. The result is an efficient, broadband, multi-band, surface-mountable LOW profile antenna.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to radio communication systems, and more particularly to built-in antennas which can be added to portable terminals and enable the portable terminals to communicate in different frequency bands. Background technique [0002] The cellular telephone industry has grown significantly in commercial operations in the United States and the rest of the world. Growth in major metropolitan residential areas has far exceeded expectations and will soon exceed system capacity. If this trend continues, the effects of this industrial growth will soon reach even the smallest markets. Reform programs are required to meet these increased capacity requirements while maintaining high quality of service and avoiding price increases. [0003] An important step in improving radiocommunication systems throughout the world is the change from analogue to digital transmission, and equally important is the selection of efficient digital t...
