Problems solved by technology

In this case, these systems tend to work under the pressure of the city water supply and are therefore not suitable for use where there is no running water
Also, these systems will not deal with some pathogens that are often found in developing countries, especially in subtropical and tropical climates

[0021] DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0022] As noted in the background section above, traditional water disinfection systems are not suitable for use in remote areas, especially in resource-poor developing countries. Many systems are used to filter water systems that are already potable, such as urban water supplies in developed areas, for the purpose of improving taste, reducing mineral content, or as an additional barrier to biological contaminants in treated water. Other systems designed specifically for the disinfection of raw water in developing countries tend to be complex to use, difficult to maintain and expensive to operate due to difficult operating conditions and potentially high pathogen loads in available water systems.

[0023] US Patent 5,780,860 to Gadgil et al. provides a solution to the need for inexpensive water disinfection in remote locations. This illustrative device uses a simple device to direct water through a shallow pan suspende...

Abstract

A low cost system (1) for providing drinking water includes a feed water container (5) with a simple ceramic filter (20) covering an outlet (19) of the feed water container (5). The preferred filter (20) is generally cylindrically shaped with a bore (19) extending partially therethrough, in a configuration commonly referred to as a 'ceramic candle' filter in developing countries. Under force of gravity, feed water filters through the ceramic (20) to a storage container (10) below. The filtered water is irradiated with ultraviolet (UV) energy either as it flows or after collection in the storage container (10). In one embodiment, filtered water is temporarily collected in an intermediate holding tank (210), where it can be irradiated constantly on in batches and periodically released to the lower container (10). Filtration through ceramic provides clear water with a low UV extinction coefficient for more efficient UV disinfection. Additionally, gravity fed filtration through ceramic (20) provides a slow rate of water flow and a consequently high UV dose for a given UV intensity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to the disinfection of water for human consumption. More specifically, the invention relates to low-cost water filtration and disinfection to provide potable water where resources are limited. Background of the invention [0002] In developing countries, drinking water is often difficult to obtain. Currently, more than 400 children die every hour in developing countries from waterborne diseases. Women and children usually fetch water from open wells, rivers or lakes for daily use. They are also mainly responsible for collecting firewood. It is simply impractical for them to collect enough firewood to boil drinking water, and chemical disinfection is cumbersome and often impractical in communities without water systems and supply chains for the chemicals used to sanitize. Diseases like cholera are often spread through contaminated water. Vaccines are expensive and practically difficult to administer on a larg...
