Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention relates to a bridge mandrel structure which is simple to manufacture, light in weight and easy to install and remove from the underlying printing cylinder in flexographic printing and gravure printing systems. see now figure 1 , which shows an embodiment of a bridge mandrel in which a bridge mandrel 10 is mounted on a printing cylinder 12 . Bridge mandrel 10 generally has the shape of a cylindrical hollow tube having an inner surface 100, an outer surface 102, and first and second ends 104 and 106, respectively.

[0027] Print cylinder 12 is mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis and, in use, forms part of a printing press or other printing system (not shown). An air inlet 14 is provided which feeds air under pressure from a source (not shown) to the inside of the printing cylinder. exist figure 1 In the illustrated embodiment, printing sleeve 16 holds printing plate 18 . Depending on the desired end use, the indicia on the printing p...

Abstract

A bridge mandrel is provided which is simple to manufacture, light weight, and easy to mount and dismount from underlying printing cylinders in flexographic and gravure printing systems. The bridge mandrel (10) includes a generally hollow, cylindrically-shaped tube adapted to fit over a print cylinder (12). A channel (38) extends substantially around the circumference of the inner surface (100) of the tube, and a plurality of orifices (40) extend generally radially outwardly from the channel to the outer surface (102) of the tube. The channel and orifices permit pressurized air to be provided from the interior of the mandrel to its surface for the mounting of a print sleeve (16) onto the mandrel. In one embodiment, the bridge mandrel includes a locking mechanism (20) which is adapted to engage a pin (22) on the print cylinder to prevent movement of the mandrel during printing operations.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an intermediate sleeve suitable for use in a flexographic or gravure printing system, and more particularly to a bridge-type mandrel adapted for mounting on a printing cylinder and for mounting a flexographic or photographic Replaceable printing sleeves in gravure printing systems. Background technique [0002] In a typical flexographic printing process, a curved printing plate is mounted to a cylinder, and as the cylinder rotates, the inked plate forms an image on a substrate loaded on an impression cylinder. This technique usually produces printing plates in the form of printing sleeves that can be inflated by air pressure for mounting and demounting on printing cylinders. Typical curved surface presses run at high speeds, sometimes printing over 600 linear feet per minute. Such high printing speeds require that the printing cylinders and sleeves also rotate at high speeds. The structure of the printing cylinder an...
