Toluene was removed by vacuum distillation to obtain a dark red transparent solid product whose elemental analysis corresponds to that of Mo 3 S 7 (Henki 2 dtc) 2 (S 2 ).

To the solution was added (NH 4 ) 2 Mo 3 S 13 (750 mg, 1 mmol). The mixture was heated to reflux overnight. The solution was removed with heat and the methanol was decanted from the red solid. The solid was washed with methanol and dried. The product was dissolved in toluene and filtered. Toluene was distilled off in vacuo to obtain a dark red transparent solid.
