Problems solved by technology

While additional elements can be introduced to achieve light bending from vertical to horizontal, adding even one light-bending element still increases the complexity of the device due to the requirement for the optical path to align with two interfaces rather than one
In addition, adding light-bending elements also increases yield loss and cost

Embodiment Construction

[0016] Referring now to the drawings, and with particular reference to FIGS. 1-3, a fiber optic terminal 100 in accordance with the present invention is described, wherein like numerals are used to designate like elements. The fiber optic terminal 100 is configured to provide coupling of light between the fiber core 26 and an external optical component in a direction other than along the longitudinal axis 21 . As explained herein, the term "light" includes electromagnetic radiation of any wavelength that may propagate within core 26, including those wavelengths outside the visible spectrum. The fiber optic terminal 100 includes a reflective surface 25 of a core 26 that is oriented obliquely to the longitudinal axis 21 of the fiber 20 . The angle of inclination of reflective surface 25 may be conveniently chosen to deflect light incident on reflective surface 25, thereby allowing light to enter or exit fiber 20 at an angle substantially perpendicular to longitudinal axis 21 of ...

Abstract

A fiber optic termination and method for the fabrication thereof are provided. The fiber optic termination is configured to provide coupling of light between the fiber core and an external optical element from a direction other than the direction of the longitudinal axis. In particular, the fiber optic termination permits coupling of light to a fiber at an angle that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the fiber.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to fiber optic terminations, and more particularly to fiber optic terminations that allow light to be coupled to the fiber core through the sides of the fiber. Background technique [0002] The ever-increasing demand for high-speed voice and data communications has resulted in an increasing reliance on optical communications, specifically, fiber optic communications. In many cases, using optical signals as a vehicle to transmit channel information at high speed is superior to transmitting channel information using other electromagnetic wavelengths / frequencies in media such as microwave transmission lines, coaxial cables, and twisted pair transmission lines. The advantages of optical media are high channel capacity (bandwidth), stronger ability to resist electromagnetic interference, and lower propagation loss. In fact, the signal rate of a high-speed optical communication system is usually in the range of about ...
