Abstract

The present invention teaches a method and system for providing comprehensive digital services, such as VOD, digital broadcasting, and a general-purpose set-top box (STB) capable of handling the various digital services in a non-client-specific manner. Several hardware configurations and data transmission methods identifying these featured services through an electronic program guide enable this transmission. The universal STB of the present invention is capable of distinguishing different services based on information received in the electronic program guide, and is capable of handling non-customer specific data. The present invention also provides viewing options such as multicast, virtual VCR time-shifting features including pause, record and framing of fixed broadcasts. Furthermore, the various digital services can also be provided through a one-way communication link.
