[0012] The audio system of Fig. 1 is intended for sound reproduction, eg as a home hi-fi system. The audio system includes an audio source device, a control device and an output device, all of which are connected through a central microprocessor 1 . A central microprocessor performs processing of signals from all audio sources including analog audio sources in the digital range and interfaces to user interface devices such as switch matrices and infrared remote controls. Using a central microprocessor in this way is quite beneficial to existing designs of audio systems as described above, as it allows a much greater level of integration. Consequently, fewer components are required, fabrication and testing are easier, and the resulting system can be reduced in size and cost. In addition, this type of system can also define system functions in software, so that a single hardware unit can be mass-produced and adapted to a specific application through the software running on it. ...
