Embodiment Construction

[0028] figure 1 is a block diagram showing a distributed computing environment 10 according to the present invention, including a system for maintaining large-grained database concurrency with log monitors combined with dynamically redefinable business logic. An operational data store (ODS) 11 stores production data generated by the production system 12 . Production system 12 may constitute an on-line transaction processing system to handle electronic commerce (e-commerce), reservations, point-of-sale transactions, inventory control, factory and manufacturing operations, and similar types of activities. For the sake of efficiency, the production system 12 maintains a local production database 13, which stores production data inside.

[0029] In order to maintain a high level of responsiveness and availability, the operational data store 11 is coupled to a dedicated transactional server 14 which provides a high throughput interface to the operational data store 11 . Productio...

Abstract

A system (10) and method (150) for maintaining large granularity database concurrency with a log monitor (26) incorporating dynamically redefinable business logic (94) is described. Operations expressed in a data manipulation language are performed against a source database (51). At least one operation constitutes the commit operation that completes each database transaction. A current rule set (55) is defined. Each rule contains business logic (94) that specifies data selection criteria for records held by the source database. A log entry (70) is periodically generated in the log (54) for each transaction committed to the source database (51). Each log entry (70) identifies an affected record and contains transaction data. The transactions identified by each log entry (70) are evaluated against the data selection criteria specified by the current rule set (55). A new record (57) is created based on the metadata (56) describing a target database (58). This new record (57) consists of selecting transaction data from the log entries (70) for each transaction meeting the selection criteria. The new record (57) will be stored in the destination database (58). The data held in the destination database (58) includes at least a partial subset of the source database (51).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This patent application claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §119(e) to co-pending US patent application Serial No. 09 / 804,672, filed March 9, 2001, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to database object abstraction, and more particularly to a system and method for maintaining large-grained database concurrency with log monitors incorporating dynamically redefinable business logic. Background of the invention [0004] Currently, the company's database management system is divided into two categories: production and information. Production databases, including operational data stores, serve as repositories for real-time or near-real-time data that are generated or used in the operation of manufacturing, production, and transactional systems. In contrast, information databases store data periodically obtained from production databases fo...
