Abstract

A method of tuning a filter to a desired frequency using a stepwise approximation. The elements of the filter are selected according to the control code used to change the oscillation frequency of the filter. The control code is set to the middle of the control code range, and the resulting oscillation frequency is compared to the desired frequency. If the control code needs to be increased, the control code is set to 3 / 4 of the control code range. If the control code needs to be reduced, the control code is set to 1 / 4 of the control code range. This method successively uses a stepwise approximation to determine the value of each bit of the control code. Thus, a stepwise approximation is used to converge on the value of the control code that produces the filter's oscillation frequency closest to the desired frequency (with a maximum error of 1 least significant bit).

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 60 / 384,290, filed May 29, 2002, entitled "Fast Tuning Algorithm for TV Reception." field of invention [0003] This application relates directly to the field of tuning algorithms, and more particularly to tuning algorithms using stepwise approximations. technical background [0004] Typically, receivers use filters to condition both the input signal and an internally generated reference signal. For example, bandpass, notch, and lowpass are types of filters used in receivers. The frequency response of a filter refers to a filter characteristic that adjusts a signal input to the filter. For example, a bandpass filter may attenuate an input signal at frequencies spanning a predetermined bandwidth above and below the center frequency of the filter. Filters are designed to exhibit a frequency response based on one or more circuit parameters. [00...
