Abstract

Methods and apparatus for monitoring and controlling the pressure in a wellbore characterized by a drilling system utilizing real-time bottom hole pressure measurements and a control system adapted to control parameters such as well shut-in, drilling fluid weight, pumping rate, and choke actuation. In the preferred embodiments, the control system receives input from the bottom hole pressure sensor as well as pressure sensors, mud volume sensors, and flowmeters located at the surface. The control system then adjusts one or more of drilling fluid density, pumping rate, or choke actuation to detect, shut-in, and circulate out wellbore influxes. The preferred system operates automatically without any manual intervention in well control processes.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to methods and apparatus for controlling borehole pressure in a well. More particularly, the present invention relates to methods and apparatus for using continuous real-time pressure during drilling surveys to allow re-control of borehole pressure after the borehole pressure falls below pore pressure or rises above fracture pressure. Background technique [0002] Drilling fluids are typically used when drilling wells. This fluid has several functions, one of which is to provide pressure in an open wellbore to prevent influx of fluids from the formation. Therefore, the pressure in an open wellbore is typically maintained at a higher pressure than the fluid pressure in the pore spaces of the formation (pore pressure). The flow of formation fluid into the wellbore is called a kick. Since the formation fluid entering the wellbore generally has a lower density than the drilling fluid, the kick would potentially re...
