[0045] The adhesives of the present invention are illustrated by comparing the physical properties of Douglas fir wood strips made from the individual components of the adhesive blend with those made with the novel blends of the present invention at different pH values. The physical properties of the finished Douglas Fir lumber were compared. Test samples of Douglas Fir wood strips were subjected to accelerated vacuum pressure (AVP) testing of boiled and cooled water to determine intermittent loading (psi) and wood loss (WF). The melamine-formaldehyde resin was Wonderbond MR-70, and the phenolic resin and glue-linked polyvinyl acetate emulsion was Wonderbond MR-47. The glued polyvinyl acetate is Polyvac MB-CB (PVAc). The adhesive mixture in the present invention is 70 Pbw (Pbw, parts by weight) of Wonderbond EPR-47 and 30 Pbw (Pbw, parts by weight) of Wonderbond MR-70. The pH of the binder system will be adjusted to the desired value by using 95% formic acid (Wonderbond Hard...

[0048] Douglas Fir woods made with various adhesives that are cured with Sonic Frequency (R / F). R / F curing was accomplished with a 5 kilowatt sonic generator, available from L&L Machinery of N. Wilkesboro, North Carolina, set at 0.44 to 0.60 amps. These samples were exposed to R / F for 20, 40 and 60 seconds. The samples tested, including the adhesives described above, were subjected to a 6 cycle, 24 hour boil test and AVP test. The PH value is adjusted to 3.5 with Wonderbond strengthening agent M-600L, and the adhesive system can be divided into phenolic resin adhesive RF5445S and Cascoset FM-6310L adhesive system. The pH value of the phenolic resin adhesive RF5445S and Cascoset FM-6310L adhesive is 8. The binder ratio is 2.3:1 phenolic resin binder RF5445S and Cascoset FM-6310L binder; Wonderbond MR-70 is buffered with 3% (by weight) sodium formate (based on the total weight of the composition); 70: 30 parts of Wonderbond MR-70 and phenolic resin binder 433-156; 50:50 parts...

example 3

[0052] Douglas fir veneers were used in various ratios of Wonderbond EPR-47 and Wonderbond MR-70 at a pH of 2.5. A sample of 10 strips included the various ratios tested. A mixture of Wonderbond EPR-47 and Wonderbond MR-70 will be acidified with 10Pbw of Fortifier M-600L. Strength and wood loss percentage of samples after 2 cycles, 8 hours boil and AVP test results, as Figure 7 , 8, 9 and 10 are shown.

[0053] Such as Figure 7 , 8, 9 and 10, the adhesive system contains more than 50% of Wonderbond EPR-47, which has ideal adhesion strength and wood damage characteristics.

Abstract

The invention is directed to an adhesive system for wood containing a synergistic mixture of melamine-formaldehyde resin, phenol-formaldehyde resin, and cross-linked polyvinyl acetate emulsion resin wherein the mixture is cured by an acid.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to an adhesive system comprising melamine-formaldehyde resins, phenolic resins, glue-linked polyvinyl acetate emulsion resins which are cured by acid or heat. Background technique [0002] Various glues and attachments are known to hold sheets of wood together. A type of adhesive bonding widely used in the woodworking industry is referred to as joining. This finger connection can be applied vertically on studs, and on sheet-like beams. This connection is made by a method whereby the wedge fingers are lathed at the end or the edge grain of the wood is joined and adhesive is applied to the exposed face of the fingers. The finger wedges are coupled on either of the two pieces of wood so that the fingers protruding from one piece of wood will sink into the grooves cut in the other piece of wood, and pressure is applied to the ends so that the wedge fingers are " Suo" together. The pressure at the end will provide enough...
