Embodiment Construction

[0032] Referring first to Figures 1a and 1b, a hybrid lighting system 10 according to a first embodiment will be described below. FIG. 1 shows a light collector sheet 12 and a light guide portion 13 . The light collector sheet 12 and the light guide portion 13 are bonded face to face. The light collector sheet 12 and the light guiding part 13 are composed of a transparent plastic material, and the light collector sheet 12 is doped with dye molecules that absorb incident sunlight and emit fluorescent radiation.

[0033] Generally, the light collector sheet 12 is similar to the light collector sheet disclosed in US Patent 6,059,438. This patent discloses a system comprising three such flat sheets. The three sheets are stacked on top of each other and are made of a polymeric material doped with dye molecules. Dye molecules absorb sunlight of a specific wavelength, and then emit fluorescence with a slightly larger wavelength. The first sheet is doped with blue light-emitting d...

Abstract

The present invention provides a hybrid lighting system comprising at least one light collector for producing a fluorescent output. The concentrator comprises an optically transmissive material doped with dispersed dye molecules for absorbing incident sunlight and emitting fluorescence. The hybrid lighting system also includes at least one powered light emitting device which, in use, supplements the output of the light collector to provide light having predetermined spectral characteristics.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to a lighting system and particularly, but not exclusively, to a daylight collection system. Background technique [0002] Electrical lighting systems tend to be very inefficient; often more than 90% of the electrical energy is not converted into useful light. However, sunlight is freely available and attempts have been made to harvest it for lighting purposes. [0003] US Patent 6059438 discloses a solar light collection and transmission system. The disclosed system includes three substantially flat collector sheets. The three sheets are stacked on top of each other and are made of a polymeric material doped with dye molecules. Dye molecules absorb sunlight of a specific wavelength, and subsequently emit fluorescence with a slightly larger wavelength. The first sheet is doped with blue light emitting dye molecules, the second sheet is doped with green dye molecules, and the third sheet is doped with red or o...
