[0013] figure 1 and 2 show a preferred embodiment forming the high capacity fire water meter of the present invention. The water meter 1 comprises a hollow body 3 in fluid communication with axially aligned inlet and outlet ports 5 and 7 . As shown, the inlet 5 and outlet 7 have a set of threads through which the water meter 1 is integrated with the framework of the fire extinguishing system. However, the threaded opening could be replaced by a smooth hole (not shown) surrounded by the connecting flange. A standard magnetic drive recorder 9 is attached to the top of the main body 3 to provide a visual indication of the occupant's water usage (eg cubic feet or cubic meters). The recorder 9 is surrounded by a casing 10 (eg brass or plastic). A boot holding ring 12 is detachably connected to the main body 3 , thereby connecting the boot 10 and the recorder surrounded by the boot 10 to the water meter 1 .

Abstract

A large-capacity water meter, especially for use in fire suppression systems, by which the quantity of water used by residents is measured during normal times and during fire accidents when water flows at high velocity from a source to a sprinkler system in response to a residential fire. The water meter has a dual element filter assembly including an outer filter for trapping sand and other suspended particulates and an inner filter surrounded by, spaced apart from, and coaxially aligned with the outer filter. The adjustable flow control turbine assembly having a rotor responsive to water flow is housed in the inner filter. The turbine assembly and the dual element filter assembly are interconnected in the water meter to create uninterrupted water flow through radial and axial flow paths through the filter assembly to the turbine assembly.
