Problems solved by technology

Indeed, momentary voltage drops on factory or manufacturing equipment can result in product loss, scrap, disrupted schedules, timeouts, and increased maintenance, all of which can significantly increase costs
For example, a power failure on a semiconductor processing facility can result in $250,000 in scrap on semiconductor integrated circuits
And, no matter how well the utilities service these plants, these incidents cannot be avoided

Embodiment Construction

[0033] Referring to FIG. 4, a voltage restoration system (here a PQIVR system 30 provided by American Superconductor Corporation of Westboro, MA.) is connected in parallel with the distribution line 22a of the distribution line network 20. The distribution network 20 is connected to the transmission line 18 of the transmission line network via a first transformer 23, which steps down the higher voltage (here 130 kV carried by the transmission line 18 to a lower voltage, here 15 kV). A pair of plant loads 26a and 26b (eg, represented as industrial equipment) are connected to distribution lines 22a and 22b of distribution network 20, respectively. PQIVR system 30 is connected to distribution line 22a to provide voltage support to plant load 22a. Plant load 22b is shown as unprotected.

[0034] In general, the PQIVR system 30 is capable of transmitting active power and reactive power to the distribution line 22a, either separately or in combination. In this embodiment, the PQIV...

Abstract

A voltage restoration system and method of operation thereof for providing loads connected to a distribution network of a public power system or network by boosting the voltage on distribution lines during temporary voltage dips caused by faults or other contingencies to provide voltage protection. This method includes voltage protection of loads connected to a distribution network on the utility power network from a voltage restoration system. Select the voltage protection characteristics required by the load, on the basis of the voltage restoration system and the electrical characteristics of the distribution network, determine whether the voltage restoration system can provide the required first voltage protection characteristics, and determine whether the voltage restoration system can provide the required Voltage protection characteristics, including determining the fault current capacity characteristics of the distribution network and the maximum voltage improvement characteristics that the voltage restoration system can provide. If the voltage protection characteristic is greater than the maximum voltage improvement characteristic, use the fault current capacity characteristic and the maximum voltage improvement characteristic to determine the impedance to be added to the distribution network in the form of an inductance.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of 01808025.1, the filing date of the parent application is April 23, 2001, the priority date is April 24, 2000, and the title of the invention is "Method and method for providing voltage support to loads connected to public power network system" technical field [0002] The invention relates to an electric utility network comprising a generation system, a transmission system and a distribution system serving loads. The flow of electricity on the network is mainly in the form of alternating current, as is familiar to those skilled in the art. Background technique [0003] To remain competitive, utilities are constantly striving to improve system operation and reliability while reducing costs. To meet these challenges, utilities have developed techniques to increase the life of installed equipment, and, to diagnose and monitor their utility networks. Developing these technologies is becoming increasingly important as the s...
