Embodiment Construction

[0026] The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0027] Figure 1a Shown is a perspective view of a 3-blade percussion drill bit according to the invention. The drill bit has a shank 1 extending longitudinally around a central longitudinal axis, said shank being particularly suitable for being contained within a drill string. The rear end of the rod 1 is connected to the impact surface 2 to withstand the impact of an impact hammer. Preferably, the impact hammer is a reciprocating piston hammer (not shown). The tip of the rod is connected to the drill 3 . The shaft 1 has a plurality of keys 4 extending longitudinally along itself. The key 4 acts to rotationally link the drill string to the shank 1 so that the drill bit can be run both in axial impact and in rotation about the central longitudinal axis.

[0028] see now Figure 1a and 1b , the drill bit 3 has 3 blades 61, 62 and 63 protruding from itself. Between ...

Abstract

A drill bit for drilling a wellbore in an earth formation, the drill bit having a central longitudinal axis and operable at least in a manner of rotation about said central longitudinal axis, and the operation may also include longitudinally reciprocating motion of the drill bit to apply impact forces to the bottom of the borehole. The drill bit comprises a surface on which a plurality of rotating cutters (9) are mounted. The rotary cutter has a rake face whose purpose is to cause a scraping motion along the bottom of the wellbore during rotary motion. The rake face has a back rake angle of less than 90 degrees facing the direction of rotation during operation. The back rake angle is defined as the angle between a projection perpendicular to the inclined plane on a plane defined by the central longitudinal axis and the direction of the tangential velocity component of the rotary cutter and a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis. One or several rotary cutters have, in addition to this rake face, a pre-cut flat impact face (19) substantially parallel to the vertical plane of said longitudinal axis.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to drill bits for drilling boreholes in earth formations. The drill bit has a central longitudinal axis and is operable at least in a rotational manner about the central longitudinal axis, and its operation may also include longitudinal reciprocating motion of the drill bit to apply an impact force to the bottom of the borehole. [0002] The invention also relates to a drilling system for drilling a borehole in a subterranean formation comprising a drill string equipped with the drill bit described above and using a method of drilling a borehole into a subterranean formation. [0003] The invention also relates to methods of drilling a wellbore in an earth formation. technical background [0004] A drilling system including a percussion cutting bit is known and disclosed in US Patent No. 6,253,864. The U.S. Patent's Figure 4 A percussion cutting drill bit is shown having a unitary body, means for attachment to the drill...
