Abstract

A voltage regulator (1) is used for controlling the output voltage of an AC power generator (2) mounted on an automobile by controlling the exciting current of the AC power generator (2) in an intermittent manner. The voltage regulator (1) comprises a circuit (14) for suppressing increase of the exciting current and a circuit for outputting the conductivity signal of the exciting current an FR terminal connected with an external conductivity monitor (41). The operation of the suppression circuit (14) is allowed or prohibited according to whether or not the external conductivity monitor (41) is connected with the FR terminal. The connection or disconnection of the external conductivity monitor (41) is detected in the case of no unfavorable influence on the function in generating the conductivity signal of the voltage regulator (1).
