Embodiment Construction

[0023] Fig. 4 shows an assembled motor vehicle door 10, which is included in Fig. 1 (with assembly drawing) and in Fig. Figure 2A and Figure 2B A structural door 12 is shown in isolation (in exploded view). See Figure 1, Figure 2A and Figure 2B , the structural door body 12 includes an outer sheet metal layer 14 in the form of a connected plate and an inner sheet metal layer 16 that is generally U-shaped. More specifically, the inner sheet metal layer 16 includes a bottom wall 18 and two connected opposing end walls 20,22. Each wall 18, 20 and 22 has a contiguous adjacent side wall surface 19A, 19B, 21A, 21B and 23A, 23B. End wall 22 features a latch mounting surface 26, while side wall 21B features two hinge mounting surfaces 28A and 28B.

[0024] It should be noted that the inner sheet metal layer 16 has no top member running parallel to the bottom wall so that the inner sheet metal layer 16 provides a large opening 24 . The outer and inner sheet metal layers 14 and ...

Abstract

A vehicle door assembly has an inner sheet metal layer (16) which presents a substantially U-shaped structure. The inner sheet metal layer includes a latch mounting surface and at least one hinge mounting surface. An outer, substantially planar, outer sheet metal layer (14) is attached to the inner sheet metal layer to form a cavity. A structural reinforcement member (30) is disposed in the cavity to reinforce the inner and outer sheet metal layers, including reinforcements (44A,B and 28A,B) for the latch and hinge mounting surfaces. A carrier assembly (60) is mounted to the structural reinforcement member, covering the U-shaped area, and a trim component (50) covers the carrier assembly. By incorporating the structural door member, the thickness of the inner and outer sheet metal layers can be reduced, for a net weight and reduced material cost savings.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to the construction of a motor vehicle door. More specifically, the present invention relates to a reinforcement member for a motor vehicle door and a cooperating door module assembly which together enable quick and easy assembly of the door while enabling reduced material costs for the door. Background technique [0002] A motor vehicle door typically includes a structural door body having an outer sheet metal panel and an inner sheet metal panel, hardware components mounted in an interior cavity formed between the outer and inner sheet metal panels, and An interior trim panel. The complete assembly of the door involves many manufacturing steps and a large number of parts. To reduce manufacturing complexity, it is known to include a number of hardware components into a door module assembly which is then installed within the structural door body. This however poses its own set of problems in that the modules are generally bulky...
