Embodiment Construction

[0021] A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to Figures 1 to 4 of the drawings. The same parts in the various figures are marked with the same reference numerals.

[0022] As shown in FIG. 1, a cell phone 10 receives a SMARTCARD (smart card) 11 which, as shown in FIG. 3, cooperates with the cell phone to enable communication with a communication network. A SMARTCARD includes a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module). The SMARTCARD identifies the user of the communication system and is used to verify that the user is one of the allowed users on the network. The SMARTCARD may also encrypt communications between the cellular telephone 10 and the communications network. The alphanumeric keys 12 of the cell phone allow entry of information into the cell phone memory and are the preferred means for entering erasure codes.

[0023] The elements of the SMARTCARD shown in Figure 2 include: data communication circuitry, logic circuitry, and dis...

Abstract

The present invention permits the cell phone owner to erase the data in a lost or stolen phone, using a preset erase code and erase command in the cell phone or the network base station, and disabling or erasing circuitry on the memory chip, preferably an EEPROM chip. Further, a user of the cell phone may obtain information of a person or entity, via a cellular communications network, by dialing a directory assistance number and requesting information associated with the name of the person or company the user has requested information of. The information may be provided to the user in the form of a vcard and may include telephone and facsimile numbers, mailing addresses (mail destinations), instant messaging addresses, maps or directions, digital photos or videos, and the like.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 405,348, filed April 1, 2003, which claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 60 / 369,431, filed April 2, 2002. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to cellular telephones (also known as mobile telephones) having memory, and to methods and apparatus for protecting private information, owner information entered into cellular telephone memory, and to remotely erasing cellular telephone memory using a communication network. The present invention also relates to obtaining information related to a person's or entity's name (eg, email address, instant message address, mailing address, etc.) by dialing a directory lookup number over a cellular communications network. Background technique [0004] Modern communication networks include mobile stations such as cellular telephones employing SMARTCARDs including...
