Methods, devices, signals, and systems are provided in a message routing architecture which provides improved capabilities for integrating “digital” communication through email messages with “analog” communication through voice and/or fax or pager messages. Email can be addressed using nothing more than a standard telephone or fax number. If the registered owner of the telephone or fax number has a corresponding email address, then the invention converts the telephone or fax number to the email address for delivery and uses standard email delivery systems to deliver the message. If no conventional delivery email address is known, or if the message sender or recipient specify multiple delivery modes, then the email message content is transformed into voice, pager and/or fax content and delivered to the recipient using the telephone or fax number which was specified as the email address. Familiar telecommunications services such as call forwarding and selective call blocking can also be used with messages that originate as email. The invention also supports use of telecommunications numbers as indexes into databases which contain public key certificates, to make it unnecessary for a proposed message recipient to provide its public key expressly in advance to each particular proposed message originator.

A method and apparatus for implementing a heuristic user interface for a mobile device that assists a user with the management and utilization of contact identifiers (e.g. phone numbers, facsimile numbers, email addresses and uniform resource identifiers (URIs)). Content stored on or being processed by a mobile device is analyzed for the presence of predetermined classes of contact identifiers. When a contact identifier belonging to one of the predetermined classes is encountered, it is presented to the user of the mobile device on the display screen and the user interface of the mobile device is provisioned (e.g., softkey assignments and screen displays) for the particular class of contact identifier encountered. The encountered contact identifiers may be used as direct contact identifiers or indirect contact identifiers. Direct contact identifiers are used to initialize the appropriate application for the class of identifier encountered (e.g. an email application for an email contact identifier) and establish contact with an associated entity (e.g. an email addressee). Indirect contact identifiers are used to retrieve locally and remotely held records containing the encountered contact identifiers.

The present invention involves a Universal Geographic Database (“UGD”). The UGD is an automated, central or distributed, registry of real-world locations and location-related information for businesses and other entities, analogous to the registry of domain names for Internet and web sites. By this central registry, businesses and other entities are facilitated to post their location and location-related information in a single place, for all users who need or want it; and users can refer to this single place, via the Internet, Web, and other telecommunications devices, to obtain accurate, complete and timely location and location-based information about the registered businesses and other entities. Each record of the UGD is keyed by a proprietary location address (PLA) based on the World Geographic Referencing System (WGRS), and optionally may have one or more proprietary location addresses (PLAs), which also may serve as keys. Associated with the PLA keys, each UGD record generally includes the full name for the business or other entity, its street address, and miscellaneous contact information (e.g., telephone number, facsimile number, e-mail address, internet website address, wireless website address). Other more dynamic, customized information (e.g., store hours, credit cards accepted, inventory, prices, specials, hours, parking) also may be available in the UGD record or linked to the UGD record. Users of any device or service can access the UGD through one or more location name servers (LNS), which can provide access to the UGD or other location-based information linked to the UGD or LNS. Based on the WGRS, PLAs provide, in addition to unique keys for UGD records, a user-friendly notation for location naming in the real-world and on all types of location-sensitive electronic devices, from web phones to in-car navigation systems. Given the UGD, these ULA/PLAs are as important to real-world businesses as their domain names because these WGRS addresses drive real-world commerce to physical business locations just as domain names drive e-commerce Internet or web sites.

A standalone notification system, including a notification server which generates electronic messages to registered customers upon their request or upon a host business request. The customer provides the system with his/her messaging identification (“ID”), e.g. e-mail address, GSM (global system for mobile communications) or other mobile phone numbers that are able to accept, e.g., short message service (“SMS”) messages, facsimile number, and/or telephone number. Customers can register with the host notification server without having any relationship, banking or otherwise, with the host. Customers can choose between different notification channels such as e-mail, SMS message, fax or pager.

An electronic copy of a paper document, such as high school transcript, can be attached to an electronic document, such as an application for admission to an institution. The high school providing the paper document is required to have only a simple fax machine. When a student requests that a transcript accompany an electronic application, a request for the transcript is automatically generated by the application servicer and transmitted to the high school. The request includes a return facsimile cover sheet that includes an identifier that can be automatically machine-interpreted when the cover sheet is transmitted back to the servicer with the transcript. The identifier marking is sufficiently robust that it will be machine interpretable, even after rough treatment or serial copying and transmission by the high school. Upon receipt of the transcript facsimile, the servicer automatically interprets the identifying information on the return facsimile cover sheet to identify the student and the particular admissions application for which the transcript was request. The transcript is forwarded preferably along with application to the appropriate institution after being converted, if necessary, to a data format specified by the institution. The servicer may also store the transcript in electronic form in a secure database for subsequent transmission for a different term or to different institution. Each facsimile cover sheet is preferably “branded” with the logo of the institution to which the student is applying, although the return facsimile number is preferably a toll free number to a computer facsimile server of the servicer. Thus, the servicer can be invisible to the high school.

A method and system is provided for facilitating the retrieval of data from a database using a communications device where the database is stored remotely from the communications device. A communications device using the method or system may obtain remote data, such as e-mail addresses, facsimile numbers, phone numbers, or uniform resource locators, from a user's remotely stored personal database.

A facsimile apparatus 1 is provided, which can access a latest database 6a associating facsimile numbers and destination names. A system for accessing implantable medical device (IMD) data is provided including an interrogation appliance to retrieve data from an IMD and transfer the data to a processor. The processor converts the device data to a viewable form that is transferred by the processor to a data destination. The data destination may be an electronic mail address, a secure web site, a facsimile number or the interrogation appliance. The data is presented in a viewable form at the data destination either on a display or by printing. Any number of interrogation appliances may be communicatively coupled to the processor for converting IMD data and providing the IMD data back to a data destination in a viewable form for use by a clinician.

To reduce workload on an Internet facsimile machine on the transmission side, and to execute a retransmission processing promptly and reliably, an electronic mail server device includes a function for receiving an electronic mail, a function for transmitting the received electronic mail to the Internet facsimile machine of a destination via the Internet, and a function for carrying out a facsimile transmission of the image data via a public telephone network. An image input and output apparatus such as a facsimile machine or multifunction printer recognizes a colored image pattern on an input document and processes the document according to the color of the image pattern. Information that can be encoded by the color of the image pattern includes an electronic mail address, facsimile number, or file server address to which an image of the document is to be sent, a folder in which the image is to be stored, or a number of copies of the image to be printed. The color recognition capability of the apparatus can thereby be used effectively even in the processing of basically black and white documents. The network system for controlling a plurality of peripherals connected to a host device through a network comprises a first interface part for supplying a communication interface for communicating with the plurality of peripherals; a network driver part for supplying a menu screen for inputting abbreviated information which will be registered in a selected peripheral among the plurality of peripherals, the abbreviated information comprises at least one of an e-mail address and a facsimile number; an input part for inputting the abbreviated information; and a first control part for controlling the network driver part so that the menu screen is supplied upon receipt of a signal from the input part, the signal requesting registration of an abbreviated number in the peripheral, and controlling the first interface part so that the abbreviated information input from the input part is transmitted to the peripheral based on the menu screen.

An image-forming apparatus and a document information management method. An image-forming apparatus at a transmission side which communicates with an image-forming apparatus at a reception side. The image-forming apparatus at the transmission side includes a first storage unit to store document data; a transmission/reception unit to receive a transmission request signal of the document data stored in the first storage unit from the image-forming apparatus at reception side; a second storage unit to store document management information having a facsimile number of the image-forming apparatus at reception side which has requested the transmission of the document data and transmission request dates in correspondence to the document data; and a control unit to control the document management information to be stored in the second storage unit if the transmission request signal is received, and reading out the document data corresponding to the transmission request signal from the first storage unit and transmitting the read-out document data to the image-forming apparatus at reception side. Accordingly, the present general inventive concept can separately store and manage information related to the transmissions of the document data that an external image-forming apparatus requests.

Commercial transactions are monitored by sending a notification of the transaction to the person responsible for paying for the transaction during the occurrence of the transaction. Preferably, the notification is sent when a request for authorizing the commercial transaction is sent to an authorizing entity. In one embodiment of the invention, the person responsible for paying for the commercial transaction can approve the transaction prior to its authorization. A trace (53) reads an arrival original slip for which the reception is acknowledged, creates a reception acknowledgement image, and stores the reception acknowledgement image in an image file after relating the image to an inquiry number. When a terminal such as a PC (11) or a portable telephone (12) provided to the receiver requests for a reception acknowledgement through the input of the inquiry number or the facsimile number, a CPU (56) retrieves the reception acknowledgement image corresponding to the inquiry number from the terminal from the image file.
