An Internet (or World-Wide-Web or other such public or private network) based business card and contact management system capable of conveying and managing advertising as well as traditional and other non-traditional business contact information. The invention is a system that: (1) accepts a Universal Contact Locator (UCL) as encoded on a business card in man and/or machine readable format and, when the Universal Contact Locator (UCL) is entered into a client program running on a client computer, (2) causes a web browser (or like program) and associated communications software to establish a communications session with a remote server computer which (3) accesses the stored contact and advertisement and news information of the card issuer associated with the Universal Contact Locator and (4) downloads the business contact and/or personal contact information and targeted advertisements and news items associated with the Universal Contact Locator to a client program running on a client computer which (5) loads the contact data into the Contact Management or Personal Information Management (PIM) system of the users choosing running on the users client computer and (6) stores the advertisements and news items downloaded from the server computer on the client computer's secondary storage device (i.e. hard disk) and (7) causes the advertisements and news items stored on the client computer's secondary storage device to be displayed to the user on a predetermined schedule in a portion of the client computer's output device (i.e. CRT or LCD panel).

Method and system for using barcoded contact information for compatible use with various software

The present invention discloses a method and system for generating, analyzing and decoding a two-dimensional barcodes representing, for example, the contents of a business card or contact information in stored in a PDA or mobile phone. In an embodiment of the invention, a process is provided for generating a two-dimensional barcode from the contact information stored in a software database such as a Personal Information Manager (PIM), Customer Relationship Manager (CRM), PDA or mobile phone contact list. The contact data is exported from the database or handheld device into a standardized format such as vCard that is broadly used for exchanging contact information. The vCard data strings are encoded into Base64 and converted into the Unicode universal character set that provide wide ranging compatibility for various language scripts including many non-western character scripts. The data strings are encrypted and from which a unique two-dimensional barcode is generated that can be imprinted on business cards or on other printed material. In another embodiment of the invention, business cards and other printed material having a two-dimensional barcode generated by the invention can be quickly scanned such that the barcoded contact information is analyzed and converted for compatible use with numerous types of software such as personal information managers (PIM), Customer Relationship Managers (CRM), or electronic device contact lists without the need for supplementary user intervention.

System and methods for reading and managing business card information

A system and method for business card information reading and managing comprises a scanner which is optional and can provide dark background, a preprocessing module, a host computer with data storage, input/output (I/O), and display devices, an information extracting module, optical character recognition (OCR) engine, an image-processing (IP) engine, an information organizing module, all connected to the host computer to work together. On top of the system is the dataflow logic, i.e. the method, which guides all the business card information reading and management in a sequence of steps. The method is supported mainly through the software (SW) running on the host computer, with a GUI to interact with end users and provides functions like scanning/loading images and managing result. Among the steps, there are automatic card boundary and orientation detection step/method, manual card boundary and orientation refining step/method, automatic key information area detection step/method, manual key information area refining step/method by using a set of template key information items as over-layers on the GUI's image display. There is also key information extraction step which uses optical character recognition (OCR) and image processing to extract key information from cards and put the results in a table which can be further edited, merged with another table, and/or saved.
