An Internet-based server with speech support for enhanced interactivity is disclosed. This server hosts a server-side speech recognition engine and additional linguistic and database functions that cooperate to provide enhanced interactivity for clients so that their browsing experience is more satisfying, efficient and productive. This human-like interactivity which allows the user to ask queries about topics that range from customer delivery, product descriptions, payment details, is facilitated by the allowing the user to articulate the his or her questions directly in his or her natural language. The answer typically provided in real-time, can also be interfaced and integrated with existing telephone, e-mail and other mixed media services to provide a single point of interactivity for the user when browsing at a web-site.

The invention provides a system and method for easy and reliable connection of patient-originated medical data through a simple port of a computer to a dedicated web site. A device originating medical data, such as an implanted pacemaker, downloads data into a transmit/receive device, and the data is then transformed in an interface unit to be accepted by a simple port of a computer, e.g. a keyboard port or a mouse port. A method for facilitating efficient automated acquisition of data from computer-based network data sources, such as Internet websites, by means of one or more data aggregation servers and a distributed network of one or more client computers (each operated by and/or on behalf of one or more end users), that does not trigger "trespass on chattels" protection, violate copyright protection of database compilations of non-copyright data or allow data sources to easily detect automated data acquisition. In a specific embodiment, each user runs a java applet within their Internet browser that frequently polls a server connected to a database storing the user's preferences. The present invention involves a Universal Geographic Database (“UGD”). The UGD is an automated, central or distributed, registry of real-world locations and location-related information for businesses and other entities, analogous to the registry of domain names for Internet and web sites. By this central registry, businesses and other entities are facilitated to post their location and location-related information in a single place, for all users who need or want it; and users can refer to this single place, via the Internet, Web, and other telecommunications devices, to obtain accurate, complete and timely location and location-based information about the registered businesses and other entities. Each record of the UGD is keyed by a proprietary location address (PLA) based on the World Geographic Referencing System (WGRS), and optionally may have one or more proprietary location addresses (PLAs), which also may serve as keys. Associated with the PLA keys, each UGD record generally includes the full name for the business or other entity, its street address, and miscellaneous contact information (e.g., telephone number, facsimile number, e-mail address, internet website address, wireless website address). Other more dynamic, customized information (e.g., store hours, credit cards accepted, inventory, prices, specials, hours, parking) also may be available in the UGD record or linked to the UGD record. Users of any device or service can access the UGD through one or more location name servers (LNS), which can provide access to the UGD or other location-based information linked to the UGD or LNS. A user-personalized product sampling, recommendation and purchasing system uses customer identification numbers and associated customer profile data to tailor specific product recommendations to a customer at a content sampling station of a retail location. The customer also can use her customer profile to receive the same information from an Internet website of the merchant. In-store sampling stations also may have the capability of checking store inventory and central warehouse inventory and providing recommendations to the customer in accordance with product availability, and optionally may provide the customer with the ability to place product orders directly through the sampling station. Systems, devices, and methods for establishing a secure session for the transmission of data from an input device to a remote server device is disclosed. The input device may be an electronic check scanner attached to a banking customer's home personal computer. The customer may visit a bank's Internet website using the web browser or other application on their personal computer, and then submit scanned images of check to the bank. When the computers and websites are uniquely identified by an IP address or similar identifier, the processes of the present invention systematically proceed through a given range of addresses to be queried in a top-to-bottom manner. The process preferably comprises four stages: the Initial Process, the Second Pass, the Ping Process, and the Ping Follow-Up. Essentially, the Initial Process establishes a preliminary listing of computers that respond to requests transmitted over the network. The Second Pass attempts to establish a connection to computers with which a connection could not be established during the Initial Process. The Ping Process uses ping commands to verify the operability of non-responsive computers; and the Ping Follow-Up makes one final attempt to transmit requests to computers that have responded to ping commands. Output files may be generated, based upon responses to the requests, that may be used in subsequent processes such as filtering Internet websites for content.

In a system and method for enabling a user to navigate among a plurality of internet websites of interest to the user, the system includes a graphical user interface which includes a guide for enabling the user to navigate among the internet websites, and to obtain access to a selected one of the internet websites. A certificate of deposit (“CD”) portfolio system and method to attract institutional investors through dealers to CD issuing small to medium sized community deposit taking institutions. The central entities of the system include a system operator and a system clearing house. The system operator contacts and signs up the institutions to become a part of the system. These institutions are community banks that are too small to individually attract institutional investors. It also contacts and signs up dealers and then unitizes FDIC insured CD's into single investment instrument portfolios which the dealers then market to their institutional investor clientele. The clearing house is in communication with the system operator, the institutions and the dealers to act as an agent facilitating transactions by issuing the CD's, handling funds, settling transactions, and acting as custodian/trustee for all transactions. The invention includes a system operator controlled internet website to provide access to information to for the use of CD issuing banks, the system clearing house, the system operator and the dealers. In effect the invention creates a meeting place for small banks to pool their FDIC insured CD's together into single investment instrument portfolios large enough to attract institutional investors at favorable interest rates because of the credit enhancement resulting from full FDIC insurance of the portfolio. This is achieved because the system and method prevent exceeding the $100,000.00 FDIC insurance limit per investor per bank.

An audio-video system and method employs a dual-control interface for directly controlling the play speed of a video track while switching among a plurality of audio tracks independently of the video. The dual-control interface enables the user to adjust the play speed of the video track to match or synchronize with the tempo of a selected audio track at any point in time. The video speed and audio selection commands can be recorded as a file or on disk along with the underlying video and audio resources for playback or editing on PCs or game consoles. A system and method for the creation and display of web annotations that are selectively shared within specified online communities is disclosed. An embodiment of the system and method include the use of a web browser plug-in that enables a computer user to create content and have that content associated with an Internet address in the form of a web note that is displayed to the user in a presentation layer over the Internet website. That web note is transmitted to a web server that stores the content and attributes of the web note in a database. When that user or another other user of the browser plug-in subsequently navigates to the aforementioned Internet address, that web note is retrieved from the database and displayed through the browser to the user in a presentation layer over the Internet website, independent of that Internet website based on user determined content sharing filters.
