Retail system for selling products based on a flexible product description

A system is provided in which a sale price is determined based on a product description, and the sale price is transmitted to a customer. The customer is not guaranteed what specific product will be sold to the customer before an agreement to purchase a product for the sale price is received from the customer. After receiving the agreement, a retailer selects a product conforming to the product description, and identifies the product to the customer. The retailer is able to evaluate a customer's individual demand based on the received description and to determine a sale price accordingly, thereby reducing losses associated with conventional single-price systems. Although this may result in different sale prices for an identical product, the system is perceived as fair because a higher-paying customer likely agreed to a different product description than a lower-paying customer, and neither would have agreed to the other's product description and sale price. The system also allows a retailer to mask product discounts by selecting undesirable redemption conditions under which to sell the product, such as pickup at a faraway location, even if the product is available at a closer location. As a result, the customer believes that the discount is attributable to the undesirable redemption conditions, rather than to the product quality or to decreased demand. Accordingly, price and brand dilution are minimized.

System and method for an online catalog system having integrated search and browse capability

InactiveUS20060095345A1Extend or refine their search or browsing activityCommerceSpecial data processing applicationsLevel of detailSQL
A system and related techniques generate and maintain a unified product index, to perform searching and browsing in an online product, service, content or information catalog. A user investigating, for example, a set of retail offerings of digital cameras may for instance browse through a Web site layout or taxonomy to locate products of interest, such as cameras having resolution in the range of 3-4 megapixels or in the price range of $200-300. Alternatively, the user may input search terms in a search dialogue box to locate those or other features. Unlike conventional e-commerce platforms in which search may be performed against structured databases while browsing may access unstructured HTML or other descriptive material, according to the invention navigation and searching may be integrated and both access a structured index derived from product descriptions as well as traditional SQL or other structured data. A user may thus transparently move between browsing the Web site and searching the Web site, refining their search or browsing activity in a seamless fashion. The HTML or other unstructured data may in one regard be processed by an index engine to identify product attributes such as type (electronics), size, price, weight or other specifications as well as attribute values, which may be sorted or stored in a separate table. A set of results generated by conducting an initial search may thus be continued or refine by further browsing down to a particular product or other level of detail. Conversely a user who has browsed to a given level of detail, such as digital camcorders priced less than $700, may initiate a search through products at that level of the hierarchy without resetting search terms or position in the taxonomy. Greater ease of use, more efficient location of products or services and less dead-end pathways are thus achieved.

System for and method of managing and delivering manufacturer-specified consumer product information to consumers in the marketplace

A method of managing and delivering manufacturer-specified consumer product information to consumers in the marketplace. For a plurality of UPN-labeled consumer products offered for sale within a the marketplace, the manufacturer of the plurality of UPN-labeled consumer products or an agent thereof, accesses an Internet-enabled relational database and store therein, information elements representative of (1) a plurality of universal product numbers (UPNs) assigned to the plurality of UPN-labeled consumer products manufactured by the manufacturer and registered with the relational database, and (2A) a trademark (TM) symbolically linked to each the UPN, (2B) a product description (PD) symbolically linked to each the UPN, and (2C) one or more uniform resource locators (URLs) symbolically linked to each the UPN, wherein each the URL specifies the location of an information resource located on the Internet and related to one of the plurality of UPN-labeled consumer products registered with the relational database by the manufacturer, and wherein a UPN / TM / PD / URL data link is created and maintained in the relational database for each the UPN-labeled consumer product registered with the relational database by the manufacturer. A consumer within the marketplace transmits a request to the relational database from the Internet-enabled client computer. The UPN, TM and / or PD contained in the request enabled the consumer to access the URLs symbolically linked to the UPN, TM and / or PD, and the URLS are then transmitted to the Internet-enabled client computer for display to and use by a consumer in accessing information resources stored in the Internet-based product information servers, at the URLs.

Centralized and computerized control system for checking the authenticity of a product

A computerized system for verifying the authenticity of products, to each product being associated a respective univocal sign, the system is provided with: a computing apparatus, which wirelessly receives and transmits data from / to a consumer terminal; and a centralized database, operatively coupled to the computing apparatus, and including a plurality of data records, each data record being associated to a particular product and the related univocal sign and having a data structure including a first field for storing a description of the product and a second field for storing the related univocal sign. The computing apparatus is able to: receive from the consumer terminal a authenticity verification request for verifying the authenticity of a given product, the request including data relating to at least part of the univocal sign associated to the given product; perform a search in the centralized database based on the received electronic data, for retrieving from the centralized database the data record associated to the given product; perform a data comparison based on the received electronic data and the univocal sign stored in the retrieved data record; determine a current result of the authenticity verification based on the outcome of the data comparison and also based on a preset verification strategy involving parameters relating to past authenticity verifications carried out at the computerized system for the same given product and / or parameters relating to characteristics of the given product; and send a response to the remote terminal including the determined current result of the authenticity verification.
