Computer interface having a single window mode of operation

A computer-human interface manages the available space of a computer display in a manner which reduces clutter and confusion caused by multiple open windows. The interface includes a user-selectable mode of operation in which only those windows associated with the currently active task are displayed on the computer monitor. All other windows relating to non-active tasks are minimized by reducing them in size or replacing them with a representative symbol, such as an icon, so that they occupy a minimal amount of space on the monitor's screen. When a user switches from the current task to a new task, by selecting a minimized window, the windows associated with the current task are automatically minimized as the window pertaining to the new task is displayed at its normal size. As a result, the user is only presented with the window that relates to the current task of interest, and clutter provided by non-active tasks is removed.

Material erosion monitoring system and method

Disclosed is an improved system and method to evaluate the status of a material. The system and method are operative to identify flaws and measure the erosion profile and thickness of different materials, including refractory materials, using electromagnetic waves. The system is designed to reduce a plurality of reflections, associated with the propagation of electromagnetic waves launched into the material under evaluation, by a sufficient extent so as to enable detection of electromagnetic waves of interest reflected from remote discontinuities of the material. Furthermore, the system and method utilize a configuration and signal processing techniques that reduce clutter and enable the isolation of electromagnetic waves of interest. Moreover, the launcher is impedance matched to the material under evaluation, and the feeding mechanism is designed to mitigate multiple reflection effects to further suppress clutter.

Linked electronic game systems

A video game system that includes a console and hand-held controllers with LCD screens. Each game operates in a simulated world populated with animated characters and static objects which are displayed on a TV screen, and are also displayed on the LCD screens of the hand-held controllers. While one part of the simulated world is displayed on the TV screen, different parts of the simulated world may appear on the LCD screens in a natural pictorial setting. Alternatively, some of the pictures displayed on LCD screens and TV screens may represent the same part of the simulated world at different times, or the same part at the same time. Pictures displayed on an LCD screen may appear concurrently or later on the TV screen. Objects and characters can be selected, moved, constructed, changed, or deleted by a player without revealing to other players these objects of interest or their disposition. This video game system will provide a new game experience in which hand-held controllers do more than just control a console game, and also do more than just a standalone hand-held game.

Video conference system and methods for use at multi-station sites

A video conference system includes at each of several sites multiple participant stations and a control station. A conference coordinator (e.g., a guard or receptionist) operating the control station receives notice from the control station that a scheduled conference is about to begin and directs a person identified to be a participant of the conference to a station designated by the notice. Signals from participant stations are monitored and if a participant station is determined to be unavailable, the conference may be rescheduled to replace the unavailable station with an alternate available station. Notice sufficient to direct a participant to the alternate station is provided via the control station to the coordinator. The subject of detecting availability and rescheduling alternatives may be an item of equipment or an equipment capability (e.g., a recorder channel to be used for recording the conference). Higher ranking requests may force rescheduling of already scheduled lower ranking conferences.

Selective Hibernation Of Activities In An Electronic Device

ActiveUS20110016417A1Reduce user confusionSystem resourcePower managementEnergy efficient ICTHibernationApplication software
In an electronic device capable of running multiple software applications concurrently, applications, documents, cards, or other activities can be selected for hibernation so as to free up system resources for other activities that are in active use. A determination is made as to which activities should hibernate, for example based on a determination as to which activities have not been used recently or based on relative resource usage. When an activity is to hibernate, its state is preserved on a storage medium such as a disk, so that the activity can later be revived in the same state and the user can continue with the same task that was being performed before the activity entered hibernation.

Telephony call control using a data network and a graphical user interface and exchanging datagrams between parties to a telephone call

In a communications network, a method and apparatus are disclosed for using a graphical user interface for telephony call control. A method is also disclosed for sending a datagram from a called party to a calling party. Call control of a call is diverted to a voice-mail system. The IP address of the caller is determined. The IP address of the caller is determined by either a search on a look-up table or from a voice over Internet call set up message. Call control information, or a datagram is sent to the caller. In the case of call control information, the caller inputs call control commands which are received by the voice mail system. The invention provides an easier method and apparatus to navigate voice-mail menus and reduces the problem of “voice-mail jail”.

Method for managing agricultural produce inventories

The present invention relates to a system and method for managing and monitoring agricultural produce inventories from harvest forward in the supply chain, including obtaining data points relating to activity and activity locations that bear on the produce as it moves along the supply chain, and further includes methods for tracing inventory histories. The invention includes three component parts; (1) management of variables that impact the crop prior to the farm gate, (2) tracking, tracing, and monitoring functions for the crop as it moves through the supply chain, and finally (3) crop-specific integration of the system and it's requisite control points into a wide variety of entities within the fresh produce supply chain with minimal impact on existing operations. Also included is a system and method for assigning a non-unique identifier to the segregated crop batch or product and associating a global location identifier indicating a point of origin of said crop batch with said non-unique identifier. This association transforms the non-unique product identifier into a globally unique identifier.

Method, system and computer program product for visually approximating scattered data using color to represent values of a categorical variable

A method, system, and computer program product for a new data visualization tool for determining distribution weights that represent values of a categorical variable and then mapping a distinct color to each of the weights so as to visually represent the different values of the categorical variable (or data attribute) in a scatter plot. The distinct colors of a splat are based on the distribution of categorical variable values in a corresponding bin, the distribution of which is represented by a vector. The vector contains as many locations as the number of different values for the categorical variable. The value stored in each location is typically a weight or percentage for that particular value of the categorical variable. Each location in the vector is also associated with a distinct color. The coloring of a single splat with multiple colors involves the rendering of each vector by looping through each vector location, and then based on the weight stored in that location, randomly selecting the same percentage of triangles in the splat for the color associated with that vector location. A threshold is used to help reduce confusion and decrease processing time by summing all weights below the threshold and assigning to it a single neutral color. A slider or other controller can be used to vary the value of the threshold.
