Embodiments of a peer-to-peer-based content sharing/distribution network (CDN). In embodiments, some peers are content publishers while other peers are content consumers. When a consumer peer gets content from a content publisher, the consumer peer may become a content publisher that may be accessed by other peers. If a peer desires a particular content, the peer may get the content from a nearby content publisher, saving access to a central server. The more a content is in demand, the more likely it is to be replicated, and hence more likely to be found by consumer peers on nearby content publisher peers. If a content publisher peer does not have all of a requested content, the requesting peer may be redirected to another content publisher peer to obtain the missing content. Embodiments may be implemented in peer-to-peer networks implemented according to a peer-to-peer platform.

Some embodiments provide tools that allow a user to share content on one device with multiple other users using different devices. The content sharing tools allow the user to (1) create a shared stream that represents a set of shared content and (2) invite one or more recipients to subscribe to the shared stream. When a recipient subscribes to the shared stream, the set of content is streamed across one or more of his or her devices. The present invention generally relates to communication and controlled sharing of digital content among networked users, and is more particularly concerned with creation of an improved sharing network for relaying data among linked nodal members of a social network. An ad hoc network may be a hybrid P2P network that conforms to a virtual peer representation accessible as a single node from outside the given social network nodes. Members of a pre-existing social network may selectively activate embedded latent peers and link to an aggregation node to form a hybrid P2P network. Content may be shared in a controlled distribution according to level rights among participating network nodes. Playlists and/or specialized user interfaces may also be employed to facilitate content sharing among social network members of a virtual peer.

A content sharing method of an intermediate node based on a content oriented network (CON) is provided. The method includes receiving, from a content requesting terminal, a proxy sharing request message with respect to a content including a content name of the content, the content including a plurality of data segments, generating data segment request messages with respect to each of the plurality of data segments corresponding to the content, in response to the reception of the proxy sharing request message, transmitting the data segment request messages to at least one terminal having the plurality of data segments, receiving the plurality of data segments from the at least one terminal, and transmitting the content to the content requesting terminal, using an aggregated data transmission scheme based on the received plurality of data segments.

The present invention relates to a virtual peer for a peer-to-peer (P2P) content sharing system. In general, the virtual peer is a logical construct enabling a number of virtual peer members to appear as a single peer node in the P2P content sharing system. In operation, a sponsoring agent creates the virtual peer and registers the virtual peer with the P2P network. Once registered, the virtual peer appears as a new peer node in the P2P network. In order to provide efficient content sharing, the sponsoring agent operates to obtain metadata describing all or a portion of a number of digital assets shared by the virtual peer members and aggregate the metadata into a single collection of metadata, referred to herein as a metadata catalog, for the virtual peer and may cache all or a portion of the digital assets shared by the virtual peer members.

A system and method to facilitate real-time communications and content sharing among users over a network are described. In one preferred embodiment, multiple links to content information are dynamically generated for a sender user. Responsive to selection of a link by the sender user, the link and associated metadata information are communicated to at least one recipient user engaged in the real-time communications session with the sender user.

Systems and methods are described for peer-to-peer sharing of electronic content. In one embodiment, if a license associated with a content item permits a sharing peer to share the content item with a receiving peer, the sharing peer rebinds a cryptographic key associated with the content item to the receiving peer and generates a sharing license for the content item. One or more computing devices proximate to a source device are identified. The source device is an end-user device having a touch sensitive surface. A gesture performed on the touch sensitive surface is detected. The gesture indicates a selection of a displayed representation of content and indicates a direction.
