An apparatus and method for providing broadcasting service in a mobile communication system. A format converter transcodes video data received from video resources to a format suitable for the mobile communication system. A base station spreads the transcoded video data with a predetermined dedicated spreading code and broadcasts the spread video signal. A mobile station receives and despreads the broadcasting signal from the base station with the spreading code.

A method and apparatus is provided for allocating bandwidth and reducing jitter in an upstream transmission in a shared-media packet-switched access network with multiple upstream channels offering integrated Internet Protocol voice and high-speed data services. To allow multiple simultaneous CBR (constant-bit-rate) voice connections to be supported by a cable modem, when only a single channel can be accessed at a time, a method to select an upstream channel and assign to each connection a time slot in the upstream channel is provided. Jitter, i.e. packet delay variation, results when packets associated with a voice connection are not received at expected intervals. To maintain jitter within predetermined tolerances, the sequence of mini-slots in an upstream channel is divided into frames. Each frame will have a sequence of voice and data-only regions, and the voice region is divided into non-overlapping jitter windows of generally equal length. Even when an upstream channel change is required, each active voice connection is maintained in one of the jitter windows, thereby limiting jitter to the duration of a jitter window.

In its broadest form, the present invention provides a method for user assisted association between devices in two classes of service, such as a telephony device and a notification device. By way of example, a user logs on to a server. At least one telephone number is associated with the user. An agent on a notification device such as a television, PDA, PC, etc. is activated, and displays a code received directly or indirectly from the server. When the authenticated user enters the code, the server is able to associate the telephone number and the notification device. Call information or call management capacity may therefore be provided via the notification device. Optionally, the user may also specify rules for handling calls and/or call information. A system and associated methods deliver Caller ID information directed to a user's mobile phone onto the user's home television set for viewing. One particular method set forth involves selective providing to a video provider information regarding an incoming call destined for and based on the location of a designated mobile phone associated with a particular user, enabling the video provider to insert the information regarding the incoming call into a video stream for delivery to a video display device associated with the particular user. According to the method, a mobile switching center receives a call from a calling phone. Thereafter, a determination is made as to whether designated mobile phone is within a home zone for the particular user. If so, then the calling phone identification and the mobile phone destination number are sent to a video provider associated with the particular user for insertion into the video stream.

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a set top box having a controller to receive a call from a communication device, present notice of receipt of the call on a display device coupled to the set top box, provide a message to the communication device that a user of the set top box will provide a return call at a pre-determined time, and initiate the return call from the set top box at the pre-determined time. The method includes that a voice service subsystem generates a message including information of a calling party and information of a called party, then sends the message to a message subsystem; the message subsystem determines the set top box (STB) corresponding to the information of the called party according to the information of the called party contained in the message, and sends the information of the calling party displayed by the STB.
