Multi-speaker audio system and automatic control method

A sound produced at the location of a listener is captured by a microphone in each of a plurality of speaker devices. A sever apparatus receives an audio signal of the captured sound from all speaker devices, and calculates a distance difference between the distance of the location of the listener to the speaker device closest to the listener and the distance of the listener to each of the plurality of speaker devices. When one of the speaker devices emits a sound, the server apparatus receives an audio signal of the sound captured by and transmitted from each of the other speaker devices. The server apparatus calculates a speaker-to-speaker distance between the speaker device that has emitted the sound and each of the other speaker devices. The server apparatus calculates a layout configuration of the plurality of speaker devices based on the distance difference and the speaker-to-speaker distance.

An audio processing apparatus comprises a receiver (705) which receives audio data including audio components and render configuration data including audio transducer position data for a set of audio transducers (703). A renderer (707) generating audio transducer signals for the set of audio transducers from the audio data. The renderer (7010) is capable of rendering audio components in accordance with a plurality of rendering modes. A render controller (709) selects the rendering modes for the renderer (707) from the plurality of rendering modes based on the audio transducer position data. The renderer (707) can employ different rendering modes for different subsets of the set of audio transducers the render controller (709) can independently select rendering modes for each of the different subsets of the set of audio transducers (703). The render controller (709) can select the rendering mode for a first audio transducer of the set of audio transducers (703) in response to a position of the first audio transducer relative to a predetermined position for the audio transducer. The approach may provide improved adaptation, e.g. to scenarios where most speakers are at desired positions whereas a subset deviate from the desired position(s).

Distributed Spatial Audio Decoder

This invention describes a method for decentralized decoding of a multichannel audio signal by broadcasting the original encoded data and distributing the decoding process between a plurality of receiving units. This allows for the design and manufacture of scalable multichannel audio reproduction systems having an arbitrary number of output channels, composed of a plurality of generic decoder and loudspeaker units each generating fewer output channels. With distributed decoding, a manufacturer can use “off-the-shelf” stereo or mono signal processors, digital-to-analog converters and amplifier components in each generic decoding module, thus reducing manufacturing costs and complexity requirements for each module while offering unlimited scalability in the total number of output channels.

Surround sound loudspeaker system

A single loudspeaker has a substantially single-point source of sound energy derived from multiple drivers to provide a surround sound effect. The surround sound is effective for listeners close to the single loudspeaker or substantially distant within a room. The physical size of the loudspeaker is convenient for placement on top of a computer monitor or television set. The single loudspeaker produces a dynamically variable energy gradient between the listener's right and left ears and the perception of sound emanating from changing locations in the space surrounding the loudspeaker. The placement of a plurality of these loudspeakers surrounding the expected listener location allows the coverage of larger spaces with separate dynamically variable energy gradient pairs.
