Embodiment Construction

[0087] Referring now to FIG. 1 , a flexible endoscopic clip applier 10 according to the present invention has a relatively long flexible coil (or tube) 12 having a proximal end 14 and a distal end 16 . As used herein, the term "proximal" refers to the end closest to the operator, and the term "distal" refers to the end closest to the patient. A manual actuator 18 is coupled with the proximal end 14 of the coil 12 and a pair of jaws 20 is coupled with the distal end 16 of the coil 12 . The coil is preferably a flat coil with a friction reducing outer sheath (not shown). The present invention will be described in detail for each major component working from the proximal end towards the distal end.

[0088] manual actuator

[0089] A first embodiment of a manual actuator is shown in Figures 1-6. A presently preferred embodiment of a manual actuator is shown in Figure 30 -37, which will be described in detail below.

Abstract

A flexible endoscopic clip applier includes a flexible coil with a manual actuator attached to one end and a jaw assembly attached to the other end. The clamp storage is positioned adjacent to the jaw assembly, and the clamp pusher is positioned adjacent to the clamp storage. The actuator includes a lever for opening and closing the jaws, a knob for rotating the jaw assembly, and a crank for dispensing the clamp. The knob and lever are attached to a separate control member extending through the coil to an adapter connected to a pair of traction cables attached to the jaws. The crank is connected to a second control member threaded along the distal portion. The threaded portion engages a threaded member adjacent the pusher and is connected to the pusher such that rotation of the threaded control member caused by the crank causes the pusher to move distally.

Description

[0001] This application is U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 010,906, filed December 6, 2001, entitled "Flexible Surgical Clip Applier," and filed March 25, 2003, entitled "U.S. Flexible Cover Element", a continuation-in-part of US Patent Application Serial No. 10 / 396,962, both of which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. The present invention is related to a U.S. patent application entitled "Surgical Clip" serial number No. (Attorney Docket #ISD-083) filed on the same date as the present invention, the entirety of which The disclosure is incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0002] The present invention relates broadly to surgical instruments. In particular, the present invention relates to flexible endoscopic instruments for use with endoscopes. More particularly, the present invention relates to a surgical clip applier that is adapted for use endoscopically and that can be used to clamp and / or suture catheters, vessels, and other tiss...
