Embodiment Construction

[0015] Embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to systems, methods, and apparatus for improving battery life of mobile computing systems through memory compression. In some embodiments, the contents of the system's main memory are compressed prior to entering the reduced power state. In such an embodiment, only the portion of main memory containing compressed data needs to be flushed. The remainder of the memory can be disconnected from power, which reduces the amount of power consumed, thereby extending battery life.

[0016] figure 1 is a block diagram illustrating selected aspects of a mobile computing system implemented in accordance with an embodiment of the invention. The term "mobile computing system" refers broadly to, for example, laptops, palmtops, graphics tablets, handheld devices, cellular phones, personal digital assistants, and the like. System 100 includes processor(s) 102 , memory subsystem 110 , persistent storage 140 , and non-volatile...

Abstract

Embodiments of the invention are generally directed to systems, methods and apparatus for improving battery life of mobile computing systems through memory compression. In some embodiments, the integrated circuit includes compression logic to compress at least a portion of the data stored in the memory array independently of the operating system. The compression logic may compress the data in response to the indication to transition to the reduced power state.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate generally to the field of integrated circuits, and more particularly to systems, methods, and apparatus for improving battery life of mobile computing systems in reduced power states through memory compression. Background technique [0002] Mobile computing systems utilize batteries to provide power. As demand for battery energy continues to increase, battery performance has not kept pace with demand. Reducing the power consumed by components of a computing system is one way to improve battery life. [0003] Memory devices, such as dynamic random access memory (DRAM) devices, account for a significant portion of the power consumed by computing systems, especially when the computing system is in a reduced power state. For example, depending on the nature of the reduced power state and the amount of memory installed, the power consumed by DRAM devices can account for nearly 50% of the total system power. Projected i...
