Embodiment Construction

[0009] see figure 1 , a wireless device 10 may include a processor 12 . Processor 12 may communicate with the various functional units over bus 14 . In some embodiments, these units may include an analog-to-digital (A / D) converter 22, a digital-to-analog (D / A) converter 24, a coder / decoder (CODEC) 26, a digital signal processor ( DSP) 28, a Joint Test Operations Group (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Standard 1149.1-1990 IEEE Inc., New York, NY (10117)) (JTAG) processor 34 and a general purpose input / output (GP I / O) device36. Additionally, bus 14 may communicate with modulator 30 and demodulator 32 .

[0010] The aforementioned functional units may also be coupled to a memory controller 16 . Additionally, a bus 38 may be provided to facilitate communication between processor 12 and memory controller 16 . Storage controller 16 may control access to storage or memory 18 .

Abstract

A single wireless system (10) is provided for executing both baseband and non-baseband applications, which is robust to a degree of protection against deliberate or unintentional conversion of protected code. For example, with shared system and shared memory there is the possibility that baseband processing code will be overwritten by non-baseband applications. By providing an address compare register (20) to identify specific addresses and ensure that these code accesses are only made to areas of memory dedicated to storing baseband or non-baseband applications, instances of intentional or unintentional overwriting are reduced or eliminated.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wireless devices and more particularly to devices that handle both wireless and non-wireless applications. Background technique [0002] Wireless transceivers can be used for cellular telephone communications as well as network communications in a network of processor-based systems. Wireless systems typically include a baseband processing module that executes wireless applications. In addition, applications not directly related to wireless communications may be performed using conventional processing functions. [0003] A problem arises in wireless systems because one application may overwrite instructions that are important to other applications. For example, conventional non-baseband applications may overwrite critical baseband code and vice versa. Such rewriting may be caused by inadvertent coding errors or deliberate actions of intruders. [0004] As a result, difficult adjustments must be made in orde...
