Embodiment Construction

[0077] Figure 1 shows a system diagram of the logical perspective of the present invention. In Step A, the source material is loaded and the software-based term extraction process shown in Step B is performed. In step C the terms are translated and in step D the machine translation dictionary is updated with this new data. In step E, the new data is used to generate a translation using input from a previously known set of translations from the translation memory.

[0078] In step F, a post-translation editing process is performed in which the translation is checked by the translator. The translator can also manually extract terms as shown in step G, and then use the result in step H to update the machine translation dictionary again. In step I, the translation is quality checked by a translator or computational linguist, and then in step J the translation memory is updated. In addition, the quality check also results in the addition of the machine translation dictionary in ...

Abstract

The invention provides a computer implemented method for use in a translation system. A computer-implemented method for use in natural language translation. The method involves attaching pieces of linguistic information to two or more source language elements in a source material in a first natural language. The pieces of linguistic information are matched to one or more predetermined parse rules. Associations are then formed between the two or more source language elements to form terminology candidates, which are then presented to human reviewers. Terminology candidates are subsequently validated by a user, becoming validated terminology which is then translated into a second, different, natural language, becoming translated terminology. The translated terminology can then be loaded into a machine-translation dictionary which can be used during subsequent machine-assisted translations.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to computer implemented methods, computer software and apparatus for natural language translation. Background technique [0002] Many organizations that trade across borders expect documentation in multiple languages to provide the greatest possible coverage of international markets. Modern communication systems such as the Internet and satellite networks span nearly every corner of the globe and require an ever-increasing amount of high-quality natural translation work to achieve comprehensive understanding across diverse cultures. [0003] As a rule of thumb, an expert human translator can translate about 300 words per hour, but this number will vary with the difficulties encountered in relation to a particular language pair. For language pairs with similar grammatical structure and vocabulary (such as Spanish-Italian), more than this number may be translated, while for language pairs with little commonality (such as ...
