Problems solved by technology

For example, users have traditionally not been able to swap out internal components or electronic circuits for newer, smaller or more powerful versions (which is relatively common in the world of personal computing)
Moreover, the user cannot change the size, shape, color or configuration of the mobile station
For example, a user cannot change the conventional "monolithic" style mobile station shown in Figure 1 into a "foldable" mobile station known in the art
Currently, users who require these changes or other basic mobile station enhancements must purchase a new mobile station, which can be costly

Embodiment Construction

[0026] The present invention is described in more detail hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all embodiments of the invention are shown. This invention may be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the embodiments set forth herein. These examples are provided only so that this specification will satisfy applicable reasonable requirements. Like numbers indicate like elements.

[0027] Referring to FIG. 2, there is shown a mobile station 200 according to an embodiment of the present invention. For purposes of the following description and appended claims, the term "mobile station" refers to mobile telephones, PDAs, pagers, calculators, laptop computers, and other similar electronic devices known in the art. Although a simple "single module" style (i.e. non-folding, non-twisting, non-hinging, etc.) obvious to those skilled in the art. The exemplary mobile station 200 includes a main body portion 2...

Abstract

An improved body design for a mobile station or other electronic device is provided. Unlike conventional mobile station bodies, which are comprised of durable polymer shells that are rigidly joined together (e.g., by ultra-sonic welding, dhesives, etc.) to enclose operational elements and circuitry, a replaceable and enhanceable body structure comprised is provided that is comprised of one or more stacked elements. The stacked elements are positioned one atop the next in a facing relationship. In one embodiment, the stacked elements define one or more apertures for receiving and enclosing one or more operational elements (e.g. a display, a keypad, an antenna, a mobile station engine, etc.).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to mobile station designs, and more particularly to mobile stations having a body portion comprising a plurality of stacked elements. Among various advantages, the plurality of stacked elements provides improved versatility, cost savings, and aesthetics for the mobile station. Background technique [0002] Mobile stations (eg, mobile phones, PDAs, pagers, laptop computers, etc.) have become widely used over the past two decades. Although mobile station designs have become smaller and more compact, the basic structure of these devices has generally remained the same. As shown in FIG. 1, a conventional mobile station 100 (mobile phone) includes a durable housing 110 that encloses various operating components. These operational elements include a display screen (LCD, LED, etc.) 150, a speaker port 154, a microphone port 155, a keypad 160 and associated electronic circuitry (not shown). The mobile station also inc...
