Abstract

There is provided a method of making a precipitated silica abrasive composition having excellent cleaning performance and low abrasiveness, the method comprising post-reactor classification of abrasive particles by air classification techniques. By setting a specific particle size range, higher levels of film cleaning can be determined without increasing the dentin abrasive properties of the silica product itself. Accordingly, it is possible to provide dentifrices comprising the classified abrasive silica products which have particularly desirable cleaning benefits for improved tooth polishing, whitening, etc., without detrimental effects on tooth hard surfaces. The invention also includes the products resulting from the selective treatment process and dentifrices comprising the graded silica products.
